Simply put ... HATED IT. All in caps. That's right, I said it! Laurie was trying too hard to be funny. After two chapters, I stopped reading. There was nothing entertaining about this book. And when you start off a book, try not to start it off with a frustrating character. Yucks all around.

Luckily, I got this book free from a friend, but, unfortunately, I can't get back the hours of my life it took to read it. It's a series of columns, which are really rants, by this woman who no one in their right mind would want to be friends with. Her sole goal in life seems to be to get "Stinkin' Drunk," of which she details the 12 levels. I guess if you never experienced your 20's or never had a gross, obnoxious, cynical friend who smoked and hated the "pretty girls," then maybe you'll enjoy this book. Everyone else, steer clear.

I swapped for this book because of all the raves reviews, but I just did not find it very entertaining. Almost every story seems to involve being drunk and doing stupid things. I did not get that from reading all of the other reviews and that is not something I generally find funny, so I was quite disappointed. Laurie Notaro is a good writer and I like her style and her non-drinking related essays, but the book was a bit much for me.

The saddest part of this book was that I could see my college self in many of the situations described in these essays. I made many poor choices, as Laurie does, I was never considered the "pretty girl," just like Laurie, and I did many of the same dumb things while drinking that she did. The good news is, I grew up. Thankfully, it takes Laurie a bit longer to do that, which makes for some pretty dang funny reading. Others have dissed the book for being too silly or juvenile...that is its charm. I found this book funny and light, easy to pick up and put down.

Light and funny compilation of short, article length anecdotes. Probably funnier if, like me, you could be a club member.

Many of her adventures are alcohol induced and the stories are from the point of view of a twenty-something, outcast, who lacks direction. It wasn't the funniest book I've read this year, but it was good enough to make me interested in reading her other books.

I didn't like this one as much as her book "I love Everybody and other atrocious Lies". That one made me laugh out loud, this one was mildly funny.

Strangely compelling and surprisingly well written, "true tales" of an "idiot girl"-- misadventures and life disasters that will make you laugh.

I didn't like at much as Autobiography of a Fat Bride. It seemed a bit disjointed and didn't flow very well but there were still plenty of sections that made me laugh out loud.

I thought this book was so-so. In some parts, Laurie was funny. In other parts, she was just trying way.too.hard.! The book is a quick read and very light. I was a little bit disappointed. I loved the beginning with the "Stinkin'-Drunk Twelve-Step Program" part, then came to loathe the later chapters.

I must say, this book did not impress me. I chose it based on recommendations from other PBS'ers and it was not what I expected. It reads like a stand up comedy routine with each chapter being a new bit. It did not keep my attention. This is not to say Ms. Notaro is not a good writer, this book is just not a smooth novell like read. If you are looking for some comic, very light reading - this may be the book for you.

This book of essays was certainly laugh-out-loud funny in some places, although, overall, she is a bit crass and gross. She's no Sedaris, but she is still funny in her own way. I bought her second book of essays and will continue to keep an eye out for her.

There were some very funny columns in this. There were also, unfortunately, way too many pieces whose basic theme was "I went out and got drunk and threw up". But once I got past those, I really enjoyed the rest. Her funniest columns deal with her interactions with her mother and grandmother.

I did enjoy reading this book. However, I read her second book before I read this one and liked that one much bettr. You can definitely tell this was her first. There were a lot of funny parts but not overly so. My favorite part was when she was talking about what happened when she went in for her yearly "doc" visit and they were almost having a party between her legs while looking for the medical equipment. I swear those docs have some secret pact to make women everywhere feel as exposed to the world as possible. I feel the same way every time I go.

This book was "ok" but I didn't love it, that's for sure! It was recommended to me but honestly I got tired of Laurie's escapades which always seem to involve chain smoking and drinking. The book is full of short (supposedly humorous) essays, each just a few pages long but there was nothing to make me want to devour this book. I stopped reading half way through it and just gave up. It wasn't a page turner for me like a good love story or a mystery where you just have to find out what happens. I didn't really care what happened to Laurie. Sorry.

I was looking forward to this book as I had heard such great things about the author. Unfortunately, I could not even finish reading. I read about the first 5 or 6 chapters before I decided I had wasted enough time. The humor seemed contrived and juvenile. This just didn't work for me.

After all the hype and friends' recommendations, I figured I would adore this book - the dry sense of humor, self depreciating jokes and slightly off-color topics sounded right up my alley. What I ended up reading was a thinly-veiled diary of a self hating, chain smoking (current? previous?) alcoholic, filled with a lot of "You Had To Be There" stories.

Notaro's most successful when reminiscing about her family, but even those you can't count on 100%. You can tell the effort was there when this was being written, the product just falls way short and reveals how hard she had to try to be funny. I'll stick with Sloane Crosley from here on out.

Funny, funny, funny! If you can remember getting "the talk" from the school nurse or the female gym teacher, you should find the chapter entitled "Suckers" hysterical. I laughed so hard I couldn't see through the tears. I love her quirkyness and somehow, can relate to a lot of the tales that she tells. I'm not sure if this is a good thing. :-)

First, I want to say that I have read all of Laurie Notaro's books, and some I've loved, some not as much. But I have found all of them entertaining. I will admit that in this one, she does seem a bit "mean" at times, but there are still plenty of funny stuff. I do know that she gets better as she ages and stops drinking!

Laurie Notaro is not for everyone. She has a self deprecating sense of humor (e.g., when she talks about what it's like to be the "ugly friend"--priceless!) that makes her at once both hilarious and incredibly appealing. You either relate to her (I did) or even if you don't, at the very least, you've gotta sympathize with her daily life tragedies.

This book seems to be a collection of mini-essays or past columns she's written. There's no overarching story, so if you're craving a "story," then don't read this book. DO read this book, however, if you're craving light humor in small doses. The chapters are short, their topics engaging, and the writing hilarious. You can read the whole book in a day, or you can pick it up whenever and read a chapter or two, and then put it away again for a while. Either way works. The chapters are set up to be independent little stories so you won't feel like you've lost the "feel" of the book if you leave it for a while. Chances are, though, that you'll find the chapters so amusing that you'll come back before too long. Like my review summary states, there's at least one laugh out line per chapter...often times there'll be three or four. Some of her lines are so funny, I still smile whenever I think of them...which might explain the stupid smile I currently have my face as I type this review :-) I gave this book four stars rather than five because some of the bathroom references did tend to wear a little thin after a while, but that may just be me. It's completely consistent with the rest of her low brow humor (which I loved). But read it and decide for yourself. With or without the bathroom humor, this book is still absolutely hilarious and definitely worth a read!
