More of a Victorian novel than fantasy. The story follows a young woman, Eliste, of the privileged class of her world, who travels to the capital city on the verge of a revolution. A French-style revolution takes place, with hints of the Holocaust and the Bolshevists, which turns Eliste's world upside-down. The fantasy manifests in the fact the upper class, or Exalted, possess hereditary magic powers. Or rather they used to, because their powers have all but disappeared.

Really clever, really fun read. An alternate telling of the French Revolution with magic!

This is a great book - I love when historical occurances are rewritten in fantasy settings. Fun and thought-provoking, with compelling characters.
