A nice Victorian mystery centering around the death of a wealthy admiral found dead and clad in ladies' underwear. Dr. Alexandra Gladstone is the only female physician in this seaside town in Victorian England, and she is a bold woman for her time, always with her beloved dog by her side, and her sidekick housekeeper and helper to provide either needed or unneeded advice. Dr. Gladstone also proves to be a very good detective.

Set in Newton-Upon-Sea in Victorian England this mystery sets the tone with one of the most respected men in the community being found dead on the beach wearing women's underwear. For some reason the local constable is trying to keep it all on the hush, hush but Dr. Alexandra Gladstone feels he is not investigating properly. This to her way of thinking is murder and not an accident and the murderer should be found.

Admiral George Edward Orkwright was one of the most respected men in the quiet seaside community--until his dead body was discovered at the shore attired only in women's undergarments. Dr. Alexandra Gladstone is not convinced that the man's death resulted from a drunken drowning accident as suggested by the local constable, who has refused to allow her to perform an autopsy. With the authorities determined to ignore the suspicious circumstances surrounding the admiral's death, Alexandra begins her own investigation--an investigation that puts her at odds with the law--and uncovers secrets even more shocking than the dead man's state of dress.
