It starts with a phone call Mike Daley never expected to get, from DA Prentice Marshall Cates III, San Francisco's chief law enforcement officer and front-runner candidate for California Attorney General. Friends they're not, but Cates needs Daley now - badly. He's just been arrested. A couple of hours earlier he woke up in his hotel room and found the dead body of a young male prostitute in the bed. There's nothing in the mounting evidence to convince Daley and his partner - and ex-wife - Rosie of Cate's innocence. But even if he's lying, its their job to defend him.

Sure enough, the deeper Mike and Rosie dig, the seamier their findings. They chase down leads that take them from the depths of the Mission District, where drugs and bodies are always for sale, to the gated mansions of Pacific Heights, frantically trying to piece together the shocking truth of what actually happened, even as the trial itself is underway.

Mike Daley is an ex-priest, ex-public defender, and practicing defense attorney with his ex-wife Rosie. If you've read his other books, then you'll be pleased that Daley's nemesis, DA Prentice Marshall Gates III, better known as "Skipper", has been charged with murdering a young male prostitute, which he vehemently denies. As the story unfolds, Daley pulls out all the stops for the defense, in an apparent unwinable case.

The situation Mike Daley (ex-priest, ex-husband, and ex-public defender) finds himself is having to defend a client he can's stand. Plus, Mike has been having this dream: Marshall Gates, the District Attorney, wakes up and finds himself in bed with a dead prostitute and needs Mike badly. So Mike and his ex-wife Rosie take on the case, but as they get deeper and deeper into the case, this get seamier and more frightening.

This is the 2nd book in a series by Sheldon Siegel. I enjoyed it. There are a lot of twists and turns throughout.

Was a very good book; hard to put down. Would recommend to anyone wound like detective/mystry novels.
