Not Colleen McCulloughs best effort, but then I don't think either she or anyone will ever top her THORN BIRDS. But the book isn't as "weighted down" with characters that have 5 first names and PHd historical data as her Rome series. (I enjoyed them too, but they are a lot heavier reading,) This is a story of passion. Passion lost, passion denied and passion released and the consequences of all.

Shorter book by the author of Thornbirds. A good story - not quite as good as Thornbirds.

First Sentence: "The young soldier stood looking doubtfully up at the unlabelled entrance to ward X, his kit bag lowered to the ground while he assessed the possibility that this was indeed his ultimate destination." "To the battle-broken soldiers in Honour Langtry's care, she was all they had.....The arrival of decorated hero Michael Wilson changed everything...."

In caring for the wounded, she found the strength of her duty. To the battle-broken soldiers in Honour Langtry's care, she was all the had. The beautiful nurse whose selfless devotion calmed the seething hostilities among them. Their one precious reminder of a world before war. The woman each of them adored.

In loving one man, she found the weakness of her heart. The arrival of decorated hero Michael Wilson changed everything. His outward toughness of body and mind didn't match the official reports of something shameful and disturbing about him. Yet despite Honour's fear about his true feelings, she was becoming possessed by Michael. And after a night of passion so long denied, the tensions among Honour's men exploded into a violent tragedy of jealousy and death... and a heartbreaking choice that Honour Langtry would endure for the rest of her life.

This is a moving novel of conflict between love and duty. Book is a little yellowed but readable.

The photo on the cover of my copy differs slightly from that pictured. Copyright on inside cover lists 1981...maybe mine is the original printing? Just so you know.
