Of all the Victoria Holt books I've read, this is the one that I remember most. Ms. Holt's typical protagonist is a strong female, caught in society's supposed limitations. Yet, the lady (always a lady, not just a woman), prevails and finds happiness. This one has a memorable characters and shows how persistence pays off.
