Nick needs to get laid before this veers into a gay romance

I love the main character Nick Gautier. The author Sherrilyn Kenyon created a real winner. Nick is witty, sarcastic and generally well rounded, except for his paranormal problems. I loved the previous books in this series. Nick has some really good friends (some of which are strange), and many of the characters are cross-overs from Sherrilyns other works. Nick and company feel like friends.

This book went off the rails. Completely. The story went on too long when it didnt matter and was anticlimactic (and rather boring) when it should have been at its best. It was also very preachy and I felt that most of the book was the author lecturing the readers (not Nick). It did not work.

Here is what didnt work: Nick auditioning for a band. Just Filler. Nick in a fight with his dad, which is supposed to be a huge deal. A real yawner. The chandelier falling. What was the point? The long letter from a friend. Severe editing needed. Did we really need to interact with Rosa and Bubbas mom in this book? The dream at the end. WTF is that?

Here is what did work: All the bro bonding between Nick and his male friends. (Warning, I know Nick isnt gay, but the story seems to be going there.) The characters. As always, a really first rate job introducing new characters, and keeping the old ones active and character diversity.

Here is what the next book needs. Nick needs to have sex, big time. He is too horny for his own good and I'm tired of reading about it. Nicks life is full of violence, supernatural characters and deities and demons. Nick (and the readers) can handle some sex.

This book is Two stars: I didnt like it but I can see someone else liking it

My 14 yr old son and I love to listen to the Nick books. We really enjoy the world and all of it's characters. That being said, this book is a little preachier than the others. There is a lot of mono-logging about being a better person, overcoming what a horrible life they've had, being the best in spite of circumstances with an anti bullying tangent that goes on for a full 5 minutes. I give it 4.5, (loved the story) just because the same message could have been given with a lot less preaching. Can't wait for the next installment.

This book did advance the story line but I don't think I will continue to follow this series. Personally it gets very confusing to keep up with all the characters and the way it jumps around so I will still follow Kenyon's other books just not this one.

** From Sherrilyn Kenyon website

The heat is on, and a new threat to humanity has risen

Nick has his drivers license and hes not afraid to use it. But turning sixteen isnt what he thought it would be. While other boys his age are worried about prom dates and applying for college, Nick is neck deep in enemies out to stop him from living another day. No longer sure if he can trust anyone, his only ally seems to be the one person hes been told will ultimately kill him.

But life spent serving the undead is anything except ordinary. And those out to get him have summoned an ancient force so powerful even the gods fear it. As Nick learns to command and control the elements, the one he must master in order to combat his latest foe is the one most likely to destroy him. As the old proverb goes, fire knows...
