I liked it, didn't LOVE it. This is a withdrawn library book, by the way, in case you care. This is the story of Clara Hoyt, and of her mother. When Clara gets engaged, her mother "points out" a few items about her fiancee and his future. Clara comes to agree with her mother's point of view and realizes that she wants more. When she marries, her husband has both money and social position. She takes on a small writing position, with her husband's family's "permission". She realizes that she wants - needs - more and moves on. She gains a career of her own, remarries, but what does she lose to gain all this.
