This is an amazing woman. I felt that this book really gave a bird's eye view of what it must be to work as a nurse in the ICU. If you are interested in the medical profession at all read this book!

Well-written, fast-paced, terrific book. Tons of great nurse stories, telling what it's really like working in the medical field and in a big hospital. It's a great book for anyone who has loved-ones who are nurses, or are thinking of becoming a nurse themselves. I've always said there are three professions that will never be paid enough even if they received a million a year: teachers, police, and nurses. Read this book and you'll understand why, and agree completely. Read all of Echo's books. They're all just as good!

This is a true story of a nurse, written by the nurse herself. If you're interested in medicine, you'll enjoy this book.

"I turned away, unwilling to dispel the intimacy of the moment. It was almost frightening when I thought of how close people allowed themselves to be with us; we were given such easy access to their souls. We were like housekeepers given the keys to every room and finding the skeletons and long-hidden cobwebs no one else ever saw."----INTENSIVE CARE is the moving and personal account of a nurse's life: from training to practice to burnout--and beyond.

Very good portrait of nursing.I am a nurse and thought it very honestand fair picture of how it is.
love humor, intensity...
A very interesting look at the life & dedication of an E.R. nurse who is also a single mom. Great non-fiction story!
The stories of Ms. Heron's life beat with a pulse of their own in her novel, Intensive Care. I am not a nurse, but found that the fullness of Heron's easy and poignant storytelling brings the reader into her life to share in the joys and frustrations of being a student, nurse, mother, and human being. I came to know the characters as if they were my own friends, coworkers and acquaintances. The reality and detail of the human life portrayed in the pages of this book reminds us of the universal experience of what it is to live. Her experiences are sometimes dramatic, tense, uplifting, sad, frustrating, or funny but always, always spellbinding. It is a true story of how to live, learn and grow. It is simply the best biographical narrative I have encountered.
I read this book because of its connection to the medical field. I was not disappointed and would recommend it to everyone.
I fondly look back to the time when I was a fresh, optimistic new-grad RN. I wanted to be consumed with all-things "nurse" or "medical" related. This series by Echo Heron really fed my appetite. In times where shows like "ER" and "House" are particularly popular, this series would be a good non-electronic substitute. (Also fun for those long night-shifts that new grads are often stuck with!)

This is a very good book my motherinlaw who was a retired nurse read it
I agree with the other reviewers who gave the book a 4 or 5. Heron writes with candor, humor, and sensitivity. I would highly recommend it.
I have not read this book-got it in a box of books at a yard sale.
