Mr Ambler is a master of suspense. His characters are flawed, and manipulated in ways we that are clear, but the manipulator and the end result is always elegantly hidden till the end. In this cold war era novel two ex spies, one from the US and another from the Soviet Union team together to divulge secrets in a monthly right wing publication called the Intercom.

The tale is how they buy the Intercom, and divulge secrets in the publication that they may sell it to the highest bidder that they may be forever silenced.

The story is one of intrigue and suspense with the main characters neither of the two retired spies. Just a delightful read. It is my favorite of Mr Amblers writings, and one I reread.
