Is anyone interested in a 2018 comtenporary lit. challenge? If so, please send ideas for categories/topics (or offer to take on the challenge design if you're willing).

The only recommended topic so far (from last year) is a sports category.

how do you define contemporary lit? Is there a time line that applies?

Anything within last 50 years (since classic lit. defines as prior to 50 years ago).

One of my favorite reading categories is travel narratives. Don't know if that would fit in or not. Since it is non fiction. I guess it would have to be a novel about a trip of some kind.

We usually have broad enough topics- or at least enough variety- that non-fiction titles work as well.

I'll go for it again so please set it up.  I think people are busy with the holidays and not online nearly as much as they usually are.  I was gone most of November and some of October and my reading slowed considerably during that period.

If sports happens to be a category I can help people find stuff to read since I have read a lot in the subject. Just send me a pm and I'll offer some suggestions.

I like the idea of a trip. a pilgrimage. there should be a lot of these since this is a popular idea in novels.

Why not include some categories featuring award winners?  I know I try to read books in several of these categories each year - not necessarily the current year's selection either.

Add a couple of categories such as favorite author, new author or recommended from a friend.  Make maybe three choices for each category.  For example,  January is the first month of the year.  Firsts could be the category.  First read by a new author, first book by an author or a plot that includes one or more firsts such as a winner in a dog sled race tale (explain how the book fits).

I know I have some good sounding southern fiction...as well as western states...and new england area....prob some California coast as well

Can be expanded into Canada....then exotic places...

I’d like to do it this year.

some of the past genres were good: translation, geographical, New to you author (I like the January being a month of firsts), author born the same year as you, books written in certain decades, etc.

Also what I like about challenges is that it gets me to read books I might never have chosen otherwise. Some have been truly excellent, unfortunately some have not.

Sorry for the delay. I went ahead and just posted it, as I think I was able to include everyone's suggestions: 2018 Challenge Lists.

Please note the (now-corrected) error in the challenge "schedule" chart I originally posted: there is no social studies category. I corrected the number of books required as well, though I encourage anyone who's willing to check my arithmatic. frown (Thanks go out to Margaret for catching the mistake.)
