Harriet and Gabriel solve an old mystery in a country setting. Life in small-town England in the late 18th century after momentous changes in the Westerman household. We discover more about Gabriel's hidden past. Another in the fascinating Imogen Robertson series.

The mystery features Crowther and Mrs. Westerman investigating an extra body found in the tomb of the Lord of Greta. The unexplained body is on the island where Crowther grew up and his brother was hanged years ago. At that time Crowther sold the estate, changed his name and assumed a new and reclusive life.

Crowther must face his past when finds his sister Margaret and her son, Felix. The sister is caustic and unfeeling while her son is spoiled and cruel. Mrs. Westerson's son, Stephen, has met a cunning man named Casper who roams the hills and helps people with his folk medicine knowledge. After being beaten he finds a dead man while seeking herbs for himself. Meanwhile, a pregnant Austrian is seeking her father who has disappeared.

While I determined the murderer before the author unveiled his identity, I still enjoyed this mystery. Perhaps it is the interaction of Crowther and Mrs. Westerman with each other and the other characters. Enjoyed, too, how the author described her research and how she used it for her fictional characters. This is an author I truly enjoy. Good, good read.

Her books have it all, suspense, action, thought provoking and great dialog with the characters. Have enjoyed all three so far and each is a delight to read.
