I found this installment to be a little boring. The mystery itself was really good and had a surprise ending - like all of the Alphabet books. The trouble was while investigating this disappearance, Kinsey also started looking for her long lost relatives and frankly I really don't give a hoot as to who her relatives are. IMO Kinsey's family has no baring on this story and therefore seemed to be just filler.

Kinsey Millhone is a great character. Light reading at its best. I'm a man and have no trouble reading this lady detective stuff.
Yet another great book by Sue Grafton. How she keeps coming up with such ideas to keep a person so interested is beyond me.

Its' funny when you see somebody and think I know he/she.Than you call the name out and he/she doesnot respond. The story has twists and turns.Keeps you questioning things in life.

Wendell Jaffe has been dead for five years--until his former insurance agent spots him in a dusty resort bar. Now California Fidelity wants Kinsey Millhone to track down the dead man. Just two months before, his widow collected on Jaffe's $500,000 life insurance policy--her only legacy since Jaffe went overboard, bankrupt and about to be indicted for his fraudulent real estate schemes. As Kinsey pushes deeper into the mystery surrounding Wendell Jaffe's pseudocide, she explores her own past, discovering that in family matters, as in crime, sometimes it's better to reserve judgment.
This book draws us through a whole heap of usual twists and turns, but also draws us deeper into Kinsey's own past. We have slowly been learning about her strange past and why she has turned out as she has. Each novel usually reveals a few more scraps.I enjoyed the book and found it a good read

Sue Grafton is a very good writer. You will need to start at the beginning to follow along.

Thought I had read all the books in this series and then I discovered that I hadn't read this one! It's perhaps one of my very favorites of the Kinsey Millhone books.
Wendall Jaffe has been dead for five years, until his former insurance agent spots in a dusty resort bar. Kinsey Millhone goes on the trail to locate Wendall Jaffe and, in true Sue Grafton fashion, meets many interesting and dangerous characters in the process.

Publisher's Weekly Review:
In her 10th alphabet adventure, Southern California PI Kinsey Milhone is working again for California Fidelity, navigating her way through a plot-driven tale that will remind readers of her earliest appearances, despite Grafton's deft introduction of new material.
Shady financier Wendell Jaffe has recently been decreed dead, five years after his real estate empire collapsed and he disappeared from his beloved 35-foot ketch off the coast, an apparent suicide. California Fidelity has just paid his widow $500,000. But then Jaffe is spotted in Mexico with another woman.
Kinsey's investigation lands her in some tough spots (such as a drunken stranger's hotel room where she pretends to be a hooker), gets her shot at and leads to a dramatic resolution at sea.
It also introduces her to a genealogist who requires Kinsey to revise her notion of herself as an orphan alone in the world. While maintaining full control of her plot's variously colored threads, many of which are tied to Jaffe's family (his 18-year-old son is on the lam from a murder charge), Grafton cameos such familiar characters as Kinsey's octogenarian landlord Henry, his older brother William, and Rose, the neighborhood bar owner. But the spotlight remains on Kinsey who, without a love interest to distract her, sticks to the case at hand and tries, with limited success, to assimilate the existence of a not too distant family, whom readers will likely learn more of in "K."

"J" is for Jaffe: Wendell Jaffe, dead these past five years. Or so it seemed until his former insurance agent spotted him in the bar of a dusty little resort halfway between Cabo San Lucas and La Paz.
Five years ago, when Jaffe's thirty five foot Fuji Ketch was found drifting off the Baja coast, it seemed a sure thing he'd gone overboard. The note he left behind admitted he was flat broke, his business bankrupt, his real estate gambit nothing but a huge Ponzi scheme about to collapse, with criminal indictment certain to follow. When the authorities soon after descended on his banks and his books, there was nothing left: Jaffe had stripped the lot.

As always, Kinsey Milhone is great.
Good book. Am enjoying this series a lot. All though I wish the author was not so graphic about the scenes and towns
Sue Grafton's alphabet books are the best. Love reading them all.
