I absolutely could not put this book down at the beginning! The story of Jacob, a 3 year survivor of Bergen Belsen concentration camp, and Sarah Kaufman, who survived 3 years of the war hiding out in attics, cellars, and in the woods during the worst of WW2, is riveting as both make their way back to Heidelberg, Germany, after the war. As the only two Jews in Heidelberg, they meet and fall in love. Part two is concentrated on their survivor's guilt, as well as their physical intimacy after surviving. The book is interesting in that it chronicles the experiences of survivors after the war, rather than their struggles during the war. There is a surprise ending, which is very satisfying.
