A wonderful book to demonstrate the ancient art of "Sashiko" which is a simple running stitch worked in repeating or interlocking patterns through one or more layers of fabric. Typically the patterns are executed in white cotton thread on indigo dyed fabric. But any type of plain cotton can be used, and perle cotton embroidery thread works well for the stitching. The simplicity of the designs lend a kind of elegance to the look of the piece. Although Sashiko is what we might consider "folk stitching," it is truly lovely in appearance, and very easy to do. This book has many patterns for the needlework itself, and many ideas for its use.
