This is poetry in prose: the psychology of an unpunished murder. I probably should say prosecuted murder; all of the main characters are punished one way or another. Read carefully! The author isnt the only narrator of this tale of the Jazz Age. Be prepared to beam back and forward in a time-warp with each of the narrators. We learn to understand them, yet in the present time it seems that the music is the underlying cause of everyones errant ways.

Beautifully poetic book, but a bit on the sad side.

The story of a triagnle of passion, jealousy, murder and redemption, of sex and spirituality, of slavery and liberation.About being male and female, African American, and most of all human. Wonderful book. Read in 2 days.

Not Song of Solomon, but pretty good nevertheless. Passion, jealousy, murder and redemption, sex and spirituality, what it means to be male and female, African American, and human.

I feel weird giving this three stars, because, you know, it's Toni Morrison, and it's 1001 and it's every book club's favorite book ever.

I feel like a failure. I missed something. I like the voice - well, voices, but all similar and real - , I get that the plot was like a loose jazz piece that wanders, and that it's a mood piece meant to capture 1920's black New York.

But it somehow didn't blow me away. Please don't tell Toni Morrison - I'd be embarrassed if she found out.

This book really pulled me in. I believe it's hard to read at times but finishing it was really worth it. I would recommended this book to everyone.

I read this for school, and it wasn't really my knid of book. However if you are looking for this type of book then this one is very well written and interesting to follow.
