A very good book and an interesting read. The book will appeal to those who are interested either in the Civil War or the early American frontier.

The author introduces many of the men who served in important posts during the Civil War and how their attitudes and characters were formed in early service in Texas and before. The book also covers the Texian-Indian-Mexican conflicts and how such began and were formed by 1860 and how they would set the standard for post Civil War conflict.

For many of the men who served in the 2nd Cavalry, the harsh conditions of service in Texas would make campaigning in the Civil War seem almost like a picnic. These conditions were such that, over the four years that the regiment served in Texas, hundreds of enlisted personnel deserted.

The author finished the books by describing the actions of the newly seceeded Texians toward the U.S. military in Texans and the actions of pro and anti-Union army personnel before the war. I highly recommend this book.
