So I don't normally get into this kind of read... I in fact, typically hate this kind of read. Furthermore I'm a sci-fi reading goth girl who likes to poke fun (all in good fun, I swear!!(-=) at this kind of read and it's readers....However this time around it worked for a few reasons...
1) I'm fat.
2) It sort of turns into a "Hey bitchy skinny girl, now that I've lost the weight, they want ME! You're actually rather vapid! HA!" kind of novel and that is very 'me'.
3) I enjoyed the unrealistic descriptions of what she ate and how she lost the weight.... because I got into the ridiculousness of it all.
So if you're a hardcore girl-book fan... and not too picky, this would be a good book. Or if you're kinda like me you'll enjoy it too.... Just don't read it expecting a long and lucious romance because you just won't get it.
Who cares if a fitness centre's owner's wife is fat anyways...???

I picked up this book because most of the reviews said it was great. I continued reading it because several of the reviews said it would pick up after 150 pages or so.
It did indeed pick up, but the writing style continued to grate on my nerves until the very last page. The way the story jumps continually from first to third person made it read more like a play manuscript than a novel.
I also had issues with the description of the main character both when she was "fat" and "skinny". Being told at one point that a size 10 "is no longer skinny" sealed the deal on my dislike.

Basic plot if fat girl loves handsome guy, who only sees her as a friend. Of course, she loses all the weight, gets a make-over, and the guy friend falls for her---although conveniently, he realizes it's the inner her he loves. Um-hmmm. But as ever, Green's writing is fresh and amusing, the repartee is snappy, and you can't help but root for the hapless Jemima as she falls from one crazy situation into another.

I really enjoyed this book. It was slow in the beginning, but once it started moving, I didn't want the story to end. I found myself thinking about the characters after the book was done!

A very funny and touching story of one womans struggle to fit in and be the woman she always wanted to be , even though she's 100 pounds overweight.

This book was a little slow at first and I actually started it and then put it away for a while and then came back to it. Once I got in to it, I couldn't put it down. All in all it is a good book. I love Jane Green!

I love all of Jane Green's books, but this one is my favorite! I loved the main charecter, it's a terrific read.

This book was a great read! I was a little leery at first, I have never stepped outside of my genre of horror when it came to reading anything else. I picked up this book when I was going through some weight issues and couldn't put it down. It is full of laughs as a Jemima, an overweight woman in London, decides she wants to meet a man. She doesn't think she will ever find anyone who can actually see what she looks like so she decides to go on the newly discovered internet. She, along with two co-workers, signs up for a dating service as a prank (for the co-workers anyway) and meets a man in the states. She ends up sending him a picture of herself that is a little deceiving and when he tells her he wants to ACTUALLY meet her....well it ends up being an all out war with her body to try to find a way to look just like the deceiving picture! This is a great read for anyone but especially great for those of us who have weight issues and think there is no way we can lose the weight! Jane Green is wonderfully funny! Read Jemima J, it is definetly worth it!

Well the first 160 pages were slow...I almost gave up on it, but then once it got going I could not put it down and I wanted it to go on....
Hate it! Hate it! Hate it! I like my share of chick lit but this book is just awful. Takes the ugly ducking to swan story and throws some exercise anorexia in for fun! Really just a dreadful message.

An extremely disappointing and somewhat disturbing tale about being a social outcast due to obesity, and the extreme and dangerous lengths Jemima J goes to in order to be skinny. Her self-injurious actions are rewarded by the love of a superficial and shallow man at the end. An insult to thin people, fat people, and everyone in between.
Helpful Score: 3
This book was well written and kept my interest that I couldn't put it down. I was also confused with the switching of the narration because I had no idea who was talking at that point. It was an outsider looking in to foreshadow what will happen soon (not that the reader couldn't already figure it out because it was a predictable story).
The story is about an overweight British girl, Jemima Jones who is completely obsessed with the way she looks. She thinks that no one likes her because she is so overweight and no man could take a romantic interest in her. I felt like yelling at the book saying, "You know Jemima, there is more to a person than just looks!" The book made everyone in the world seem shallow and that men and women only like others because they are thin, gorgeous and are healthy.
This is why I had some problems with the way the material was presented in the book. I felt sorry for Jemima, living with two roommates who were nice to her face but rude to her behind her back. When she met someone (a man), they always had an ulterior motive for 'getting the guy.' That part could be one of the realistic points of the book.
I felt that the moral of the story was to lose weight until you look like a model in a magazine and then the world is in the palm of your hand. You can then get anything you want in life.
Yes, this story is a modern day fairy tale.

This was an awful, awful book. I don't know how else to say it. The main conflict of the book is that an overweight, frumpy girl lies about her appearance to a guy she meets online and then when he wants to meet, how is she going to tell him that she isn't really hot and thin? Will he still love her for her personality?
Well, the conflict is resolved by...she loses weight and magically becomes hot and thin. That's it. It takes one and a half whole pages for her to lose 100 pounds. "Hey I just needed to diet and exercise and, you know, stop craving food! So easy!" Not only is this an incredibly lazy way to resolve the conflict, it's totally unrealistic and silly.
The moral of the story is that beauty actually is what's on the outside, not the inside. Great. Shallow and boring.

The book "Jemima J" was a fast read. I enjoyed the writing style of Jane Green. At the beginning, I was getting frustrated with the changes of point of views. It would be third person, and then it would switch to first person. Along the way, I got used to it and I believe that it made the book more enjoyable.
I loved the book. It is now one of my favorites. I am not going to mention much, since this is a review not a summary. It's hard to put down, and reading this book while walking on the treadmill, really inspire me to keep going! :)
-- I don't think it's as predictable as other reviews claim. The book had me excited and shocked, but it's probably because I haven't read a book like this in awhile.
I am most definitely going to read it again and I am looking forward to other works of Jane Green.

If you have ever had any extra weight on in your life, then look no further, take off your shoes, pour some wine, light a fire, and settle in for a long night of reading. Jane Green is witty, yet uncanny in her portrayal of a woman whose extra pounds affect every decision and conversation she has. I will definitely be reading more from this author. Great book for some light reading.

Although it did have a slow start, the ending made up for it. It's like a modern day 90's Cinderella story set in London and towards the end in Los Angeles. I fell in love with the characters and there was a part that made me tear up. The story occasionally switches back and forth to a 3rd person narrator (maybe a fairy godmother speaking?) which was kind of odd, but I don't think it was too bad. If this was turned into a chick flick, it would be a very cute movie. Overall, it's a delicious read. :)

This book is a pretty good read but some parts bothered me. I liked the character and had fun reading the book, storyline was good, etc. But the book kept saying how the Main Character is so FAT, so heavy, huge, etc and come to find out she only weighed 204 lbs at 5'7 and yes, that's overweight but not morbidly obese! I weigh more than that and I know I am overweight but gee!!! Also the switch from first person to third is just weird. Other than that though it was a good book.

This book started off kind of slow for me, but really picked up after about 60 pages. I was able to relate to Jemima in some ways, which was interesting. I found myself wanting her to succeed in everything she did! By the way, size 10 is not fat!

The story of a aspiring journalist stuck writing the "Top Tips" for a local paper, whose weight loss and improved self esteem make all her dreams come true (or she thinks). Unintended humor (for me) was the description of "cutting edge" computer technology (chat rooms, search engines) in the 90's.

reminded me of bridget jones diary, in that it was a british, fluffy novel with somewhat stereotypical characters. this one is sort of a cinderella story-- the chubby girl loses weight and gets a really hot guy but then realizes looks aren't everything. the title character is likeable but don't expect much more than entertaining, breezy chick lit.
I loved this book! Very interesting way of telling the story by showing the reader multiple points of view throughout the book. I enjoyed this quick read.

Like many of the Jane Green books that I have read, the central theme of this book is to highlight the differences between passion and love. It's something that I've always taken to heart in her books.
Jemima J. is a very easy read, and kept me interested the whole way through. The narrative is realistic and I can relate to the main character.
The storyline is a little dated, but I got a good laugh remembering back when I used to chat with guys on the internet from across the world. But once you get past how she meets "the gorgeous Brad," the rest of the story is timeless.
I definitely recommend it, and any of Jane Green's novels. (My favorite is "Straight Talking")

Jemima J is a late twenty-something in London who is overweight and hides her inadequacies behind all the food she consumes non stop, day and night. From afar, she pines for handsome co-worker Ben, and he appears to never notice her until they take an Internet class for work. They bond over learning the web, and eventually Jemima discovers chat rooms, and starts chatting innocently with a man from LA. She tells him she is young and beautiful, and sends him a very well edited photo of herself, although herself almost 80 pounds lighter!
Eventually she travels to LA to meet Brad, after obsessively working out and dieting her way down to the size she always longed to be. She flies to LA to meet her Internet love, and although things are blissful at first, she soon learns that appearances are not always what they seem.
A good read...kinda hard for me personally to get into at first, because Jemima reminds me of myself about 10 years ago. However, it was overall a good book!

While this book did manage to keep my attention during a beach vacation, the writing style of having an omniscient narrator in addition to first person accounts (Jemima) in the storyline was just distracting and bizarre. It would have worked in a movie, similar to "Little Children", but in a book it was just flat-out annoying.
Although I fully understand the concept of "willing suspension of disbelief", this book just flat out abuses that convention. The twists, turns, surprises, and coincidences just "aren't bloody likely" as Jemima would say. While it's a mildly entertaining read, there's much better stuff out there. As it's the first Jane Green book I've read, I'm not sure I'll pick up any more of her books.

Great, fun read!
This was a page turner....I couldn't put it down!
This is one of the funniest chik lit books I have ever read.
Not quite what I thought it would be. It was a good book but at time I was frustrated by it.
I read this book during summer. It's one of those lazy day reads. So what if it wasn't so realistic!! The plot is sort of slow to start but it does pick up once you get through the first 100 pages. The main character is pretty quirky and fun, you will find yourself routing for her as you read along. This is definitely a âchick-litâ read. Although it was a tad predictable and a little cliché, overall I thought it was a good read!
I hava personal rule that if I start reading a book I must finish it...no matter what! Well, good things rules are meant to be broken, because I could absolutely not get into this book. I am a big fan of chick-lit but did not get into this one at all.
By the looks of the reviews here, you will either love it or hate it. I am in the Love It catagory. There is just something very personal, charming, and endearing about this book, I could almost read it a second time, which is saying something for me,...it's a rarity I do so. Yes, it is unrealistic to think of someone shrinking as fast as Jemima does with weight loss here..but hey,...it's fiction people. It's entertaining, not as predictable as mentioned or expected, and a very full, funny read.
A very good read. Get inside the mind of a young woman, who is overweight. Feel her pain and anguish and then her determination to overcome. Wonderful insight, great outcome. You will love the journey.
Jemima was a treat. I really enjoyed the characters and the story. My only criticism (and it's a small one) is that the ending felt like it dragged a little and then just stopped suddenly; I probably only feel this way because I REALLY wanted to know what happened at the end, but at the same time I didn't want the story to end because I liked it so much!
This is a fun, relatively quick read.
This is a fun, relatively quick read.
I LOVED this novel! I now have three copies so that I can lend it out to friends! It is a work of fiction, that I am aware, however, it was instrumental in my weight loss a couple of times! I lost 10 pounds after I read it the first time and 30 pounds after the second! It is an inspirational and fun read. Jane Green is an exceptional writer. Her characters are so real that I want to become friends with every single one of them!
was a cute book, but it didnt end the way i wish it would have. sometimes they dont always need that perfect ending-- thats not how life really is
Very entertaining and a quick read! I'm looking forward to reading more by Jane Green.
I also thought Jane Green did a great job of Jemima's mental state before and after she lost weight. The novel is based in a suburb of London and the main character, Jemima, is a columnist with a small, local paper, and one hundred pounds overweight. The story revolves around a co-worker, Ben, who is doing his time at the local paper before he moves on to bigger and better things. The book addresses self esteem issues, internet dating and the treatment of large people in our society. Jemima J also discusses when weight loss is taken to extremes and becomes an obsession. Jemima takes us on a whirlwind trip to Los Angeles with her internet romance gym owner, Brad, for whom she loses all the weight. Inside, she is still fat and questions her new dalliance--with good reason! The book has some great twists and I read it in a day. This is one of those books that you look up at the clock, it's three in the morning, and you wish you you could keep reading & finish it! Enjoy...
A good read and interesting for anyone who has stuggled with being an ugly duckling or a swan.
A little slow to start but once it got going it was very enjoyable. I am a big fan of Jane Green. Great entertaining read.
I really enjoyed reading this book.
I'm chubby so I had a few issues with this book (although I could certainly relate Jemima...), but overall I guess it was a good enough read.
This book is a about a fat girl that obsessives over food and cravings. This is a great read for someone that can relate to being judged on looks alone.
Very good book. I would reccomend this for women who need a boost of confident.
Typical chick lit - a light, funny read for a lazy weekend.
A great story!I really enjoyed this one.
Well thought out story of how a"fat" girl evolves into the woman she wants to be.
Love, love, love this book! Every woman can feel Jemima's pain as her character progresses through the novel to the realization that the perfect shape may not bring about the perfect mate.
Such an utterly enjoyable book!
What an endearing novel - I tore right through it! Jane Green has done it again! The perfect "cinderella" story for today's ladies.
A smart funny novel about the ugly ducklings and swans of the world.
I couldn't put this one down. You just want to keep reading to see what's happening with Jemima next.

Interesting plot twist after she meets her "Mr. Right"!
Just finished reading another great one by Jane!!
"Bored, fat and unhappy" Jemima Jones is a hack writer on a small London paper, whose weight precludes both promotion (which she richly deserves, because she's smart) and getting together with the man of her dreams: kind, modest and gorgeous reporter Ben Williams. The Web opens a new world to Jemima, and when she begins an online correspondence with L.A. gym owner Brad, identifying herself as JJ, her friend Geraldine encourages her to send Brad a doctored photo of what she would look like if she were thin. Jemima joins a gym, goes on a diet and even becomes a blonde, preparing to accept Brad's invitation to come to L.A. Lucky JJ: Brad turns out to be a hunk, and the sex is great... but JJ senses that something is wrong. Meanwhile, Ben has become a celebrity "presenter" on British TV, but while the whole country goes gaga over his looks, he too feels that something is missing.
great chick lit, very funny!
I thought this book was horrible. I enjoyed Jane Green's other books, but this one was an awful story.
Funny and very enjoyable.

Great chic lit book - I really enjoyed it!
An must read of any ChickLit enthusiast!! Jane Green can really deliver a hard to put down novel.
Jane Green is a hilarious author. I've read this book many times and it always makes me laugh.
The chronicle of one womsn's quest to become the woman she's always wanted to be, learning along the way a host of lessons about attraction, addiction, the meaning of true love, and ultimately who she really is.
Good book. Beach reading material. It is about a women who is overweight and "reinvents" herself on the interent. She then has to do it for real when the man she has been chatting with wants to meet her. I really liked it because it wasn't "mushy". It deals with many issues in a funny yet practical way. Things that happen to this woman can and do happen in real life.
I thought this book was hilarious!

Enjoyable chick lit. It was better than Jane Green's Bookends or To Have and To Hold, but not as good as Mr. Maybe.
What a fun and uplifting read. Great for the girl who needs a pick me up and a great love story all in one!
A fluffy, chick lit book in the same vein as _Bridget Jones' Diary_ (right down to the last name!) about love, weight and all the rest. All in all, it was fun, but in an odd writing style, switching from first, to second, to third person P.O.V. willy-nilly.
This is just a fun read, sort of like candy.
This book is GREAT!!! I read this book while on vacation in about 2 days I loved it so much. The way this author writes is just superb!
Pretty good book. Gives hope to us fat chicks that things can go for us the way they went for JJ
This book has the same, trite plot of most of the chik-lit out there. It was cute and a quick read. If you're looking for something that doesn't require too much brain power, and a warm, fuzzy feeling at the end, give it a shot.
This was an entertaining read.
I happen to love this book. I couldn't put the book down that is how good it is! I even made my mom read the book and she loved it too!
I loved it. I gave it to my best friend and she loved it. Now my sister has bought a copy too! My first time reading Jane Green and she is GREAT...since I finished I have bought three of her other books.
Cute book, fun read, definitely parts where I couldn't put it down
This book was a little far-fetched, but the character was so loveable, I still had a great time reading it. You'll love Jemima!

This was pretty cute, easy reading, but completely unrealistic. Enjoyable, light reading.
OMG one of my all time favorite books! It is a great motivative book for those wishing to loose some inches!
I love Jane Green!!! A book about someone like most of us (not so perfect). I was able to relate to the character in most of her problems. This book was hard to put down and put a smile on my face until I was finished. Highly recommend this book and author!
Enjoyed the book. Fun read.
Quirky and fun characters! Easy, fun read.
Subtitled 'a novel about ugly ducklings and swans' - with a twist. It inspired me to keep going to the gym anyway just in case.
Absolutely super book by a great author. It manages to be funny, enjoyable and emotional, yet also consider some home truths about life.
Good chick lit, I liked it. A good quick read.
Cute, quick read!!!!

A little self-conscious, but an enjoyable story nonetheless.
This is a great book! I want more of Jane Green's books. If you are or ever have been over weight or know of someone who is, you HAVE to read this book.
Yet another take on the singles scene, and from yet another British writer, this jaunty novel has one slightly new focus--the Internet as a dating device. By the time several coincidences produce a dreams-come-true ending, readers are fond of plucky Jemima, but somewhat tired out by her adventures.
I loved this book. While I would have liked for Jemima to have found happiness without having to totally change who she was, I still enjoyed the book alot and recommend it to all my friends. I have now gotten several other copies of Jane Green novels and am anxious to read those also.
I love this story. It was funny, sexy and inspiring.
This was such a fun read. Jemima is a great character--I could barely stand to put the book down!! What a great story!
Didn't hold my attention at all. Very boring chick-lit.
My favorite book ever!
I love this story it kept me wrapped up. I love the ugly duckling into beauty story. Take the time to read it.
Funny chick lit. Not unlike Sophie Kinsella's style. Quick, easy, funny, light reading.
Fun read, Jane Green writes good chick lit.
This book is hilarious!!
Easy read, but completely unrealistic...
Good read, I'm always a sucker for an ugly duckling becomes swan story.
I loved this novel! I enjoyed the author's style - she lets you hear what's going on inside their heads, and not just the main character.
Jemima Jones is overweight. About one hundred pounds overweight. Treated like a maid by her thin and social-climbing roommates, and lorded over by the beautiful Geraldine (less talented but better paid) at the Kilburn Herald, Jemima finds that her only consolation is food. Add to this her passion for her charming, sexy, and unobtainable colleague Ben, and Jemima knows her life is in need of a serious change. When she meets Brad, an eligible California hunk, over the Internet, she has the perfect opportunity to reinvent herselfas JJ, the slim, beautiful, gym-obsessed glamour girl. But when her long-distance Romeo demands that they meet, she must conquer her food addiction to become the bone-thin model of her e-mailsno small feat.
With a fast-paced plot that never quits and a surprise ending no reader will see coming, Jemima J is the chronicle of one woman's quest to become the woman she's always wanted to be, learning along the way a host of lessons about attraction, addiction, the meaning of true love, and, ultimately, who she really is.

Cute with a contemporary, yet light-hearted story line
read this - it's cute, but not as good as "Good in Bed"
One of my favorites of all time.
Interesting story about an overweight woman who starts an online romance with a handsome man who thinks she's thin, and fit. Then he wants to meet her!
This isn't your typical romance, girl finds boy and then they fall in love after the required complications. No, this is more that girl finds HERSELF (but there are still complications, of course.) She finds a boy or two along the way, of course... They are part of the complications.

Great airplane reading. Jemina J is very likeable!
A fun read. We never get tired of Cinderella stories.
Easy, fun read...though a little ridiculous, for some reason I still couldn't put it down. Good summer reading.
I LOVED THIS BOOK. IT WAS A REAL INSPIRATION. MY GRANDDAUGHTER (19) LOVED IT TOO.
In this novel, the ugly duckling becomes a swan
