Its very hard to review a book this good without a bunch of spoilers, but here goes:

It is rare one comes across a gem in a used bookstore in like new condition. Origionally purchased for a swap, I took a peek at the first chapter to see if it was worth reading.

What I got when I opened the book was a tender love story, laced with humor and danger, and got sucked into a storey that was un-put-down-able. Fans of Twilight are sure to eat this story up in a heartbeat. The only thing wrong with this book was that it ended.

Jessica is just your average teen, living her average life... a mathlete, riding horses, and has her eye on a nice average boy named Jake. Her world is turned upside down with the arrival of Lucious Vladescu, a tall dark handsome boy from Romania who claimes to be a vampire prince. If THAT wasnt wierd enough, Lucious tries to court Jessica, explaining that she is his rival clans' decendant princess, and they are destined to marry in order to bring peace to the 2 clans. Jessica is extremely reluctant to this idea, and after a series of crazy events, she realises her love for him... only its too late. Lucious has a new girlfriend and he decides to dishonor the pact. Jessica finally decides to fight for what she wants in order to save Lucious, herself, and her clan.

What a wonderful story. The characters felt so real and the words flowed off the pages effortlessly. Im xcited to read about the wedding on the authors website, and look forward to the next installment when Jessica Rules the Darkside.....

I loved this book personally it was one of my "can't put it downs". I even bought the book after reading it at the library and I have re-read at least 3 times since then.

Debut author Beth Fantaskey explodes onto the heavily populated YA vampire lit world with her amazing book, JESSICA'S GUIDE TO DATING ON THE DARK SIDE, which is sure to convert Twilight fans into having a new favorite vampire and vampire-novel heroine. Or if it doesn't do that, then at least it will leave you smiling, biting your nails, and reading far into the night.

In rural Pennsylvania, math nerd Jessica Packwood is about to enter her senior year of high school, determined to have a good time, potentially date Jake Zinn, a nice and handsome boy in her grade, and win some more math competitions. But her carefully imagined plan goes down the drain with the arrival of Lucius Vladescu, a hot but arrogant student from Romania who is under the unfortunate delusion that he is a vampire prince destined to marry Jessica, who is apparently a vampire princess from a rival vampire family. Their marriage would end a centuries-long war between the two families and ensure peace for all their vampire relatives.

Jessica, who loves scientific facts, is understandably confused, scared of her reluctant attraction to Lucius and unable to believe the "parlor tricks" that he performs: a flash of fangs here, a miraculous recovery from a serious injury there. But just as she begins to finally believe--in Lucius, in herself--Lucius suddenly begins to court Faith Crosse, the evil-souled reigning cheerleader-slash-prom-queen of Woodrow Wilson High, and Jessica finds herself struggling to win him back, and not just for the sake of her own heart. For if she doesn't, both vampire families, not to mention Lucius, could end up being destroyed.

Wow! It is almost unfortunate that this book has such an unwieldy and frothy, though eye-catching, title, because I did not realize the extent of what I was in for when I started reading. Jessica and Lucius are two of the best main characters that I have read about in a long time: they are fully three-dimensional and undergo incredible growth through the 350-some pages. Lucius' intensity and arrogance makes me simultaneously laugh and be attracted to him at the same time, and some of my favorite chapters were those that consisted of Lucius' letters to his uncle back in Romania. The relationship that develops between Jessica and Lucius seems totally natural, the growing love not forced. The plot goes beyond a typical Twilight spinoff (which all current YA vampire novels are inevitably being compared to), and reaches its awe-inspiring conclusion wonderfully.

Action, love, mortal danger, family, humor--JESSICA'S GUIDE TO DATING ON THE DARK SIDE has everything. I am wholeheartedly a fan, and you will be too.

Summary: The undead can really screw up your senior year . . .

Marrying a vampire definitely doesn't fit into Jessica Packwood's senior year "get-a-life" plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birthâand he's her long-lost fiancé. Armed with new found confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire's Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions, Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire warâand save Lucius's soul from eternal destruction

I am still unsure what I feel about this book. There are parts where I was completely enthralled and couldn't put it down, and others where I wanted to roll my eyes and walk away for a bit. Both Jessica and Lucius take on Bella and Edwards most uncharitable personality characteristics; Lucius is dark, moody, and whiny through most of the book and Jessica is so bone headed she can't see a vampire when he is standing in front of her. The plot was strong, but felt a bit anti-climactic and rushed at the end, but overall not to bad. I also believe if you are sacrificing yourself up like a ham, there should be a bit more drama, but there wasn't. Even with all the negative in this review, the tension between the two main characters is palpable, in both sexual and psychological.

Do you ever see a book and get the feeling that your going to love it, well I don't get that feeling very often but I did with this book. I was afraid that I had set my hopes a little to high so I put off reading it for a little while just in case I got let down. I needn't have worried though because I loved this book!
Jessica Packwood never wanted to hear much about her natural parents, to her they were crazy people in a cult. She was embarrassed by her past so imagine her anger when someone shows up shoving it in her face everyday. Not only does he want her to accept her past but he wants her to embrace it.
Lucius Vladescu is the name of Jessica's tormentor. He's tall, dark, and handsome. But he is also delusional as far as Jessica is concerned. He speaks of vampires, royalty, and a pact that will end a war. He talks different, dresses different, and everything he does is done with such ease and grace it seems unnatural.
All Jessica wanted was to lose five pounds, and follow her "get a life" plan, but all of this is thrown out the window when Luscius shows up.
This is a really good story! Beth Fantaskey did a wonderful job building the characters up and keeping them true to their form! If you love paranormal romance then you will love this book!

I loved this book! When reading YA, I tend to find myself hoping that it would be more adult (i.e. a bit steamier). Some YA books are steamier than others. I found that the romance and the love between the two characters made it strong enough alone, that there didnt need to be a bunch of make-out scenes for me. I thought it was perfect.

Needless to say, I am anticipating the sequel Jessica Rules the Dark Side. Although it will not be released until early 2012, fans of Jessica and Lucius can get their fix by reading The Wedding of Anastasia Jessica Packwood and Lucius Valeriu Vladescu on Beth Fantaskeys page (http://www.bethfantaskey.com/wedding/wedding-chapt1.html)

I certainly recommend YA lovers (especially those who love vampires) to read this book. It was a very cute, couldnt-put-down teen novel! :)

The story felt lopsided, we knew nearly everything about Jess and nothing about Luc. Was ok ,

I picked up this book thinking it was going to be a fluffy, entertaining teen oriented book, good for a quick read. About halfway through it, I got so wrapped up and invested in it, I was shocked. By the end of the book, I couldn't believe how good it had become, and was depressed that I had finished it, and didn't have the sequel available to start yet. I will definitely be getting the sequel ASAP!

I listened to the audio CD version of this book. It was an alright story. There wasn't anything that stood out and made me think wow! Vampire prince comes to America to claim his vampire princess. She has been raised in the modern world and doesn't want to be controlled. Prince gives her space and ends up giving up and heads back to Romania. Princess realizes she loves prince and runs after him. That sums it up...:)

MY THOUGHTS
I was very doubtful about this book at first. Mainly, the title. Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side. It just sounds so cheesy! Add the fact that my own name is Jessica, and reading books with characters named Jessica is an awkward experience.
Then, I started the book, and I was still doubtful. We begin with Jessica waiting for the bus and seeing a creepy guy near her bus stop. Of course, she is freaked out by this, but she gets on the bus and later, in class, discovers that the same guy is the new exchange student. See, this is starting to sound like a typical paranormal teen book, and it gets worse. When Jess in in class, she gets a paper-cut and our creepy new friend starts licking his lips at all that blood. So, I was thinking, "This is not going to be anything new. This is just another cliche paranormal and it's going to take her forever to figure out that he's a vampire, even though it's so frexing obvious!"
I judged this book way too quickly. Shorty after the paper-cut, maybe a few short chapters, Jess stabs him in the foot with a pitchfork. That turned this book around for me! I knew that this girl wasn't going to take any crap and that she would think logically!
I admit it, one of my favorite things about this book was the romance. A majority of the book did not have the romance, but I was shipping it so hard. Almost the entire book is both Jess and Lucius ignoring the fact that they have feelings for one another. The relationship also had a bit of hate-to-love which is one of my all-time favorite tropes relationship-wise!
The downside of my hardcore shipping, was that I was endlessly frustrated with the characters and the story. I just wanted them to kiss, but they just wanted to go off an date other people, and completely ignore my constant shouting of "JUST KISS ALREADY!" But this all this means that I was deeply invested in the book. I was emotionally invested and I absolutely was not about to stop reading.
Yes, the ship is the main reason why I enjoyed this book, but in order to ship is, I have to actually like the characters I'm shipping. But not only were the main characters amazing, but the minor characters were great as well. And, yes, this book was surprisingly humorous!
I would also like to mention that my doubts about the main character's name being the same as mine as ridiculous. It didn't make the book awkward at all! Not only does she mostly go by a nickname, Jess, but her personality and looks in general are completely different than mine, so I never though of her as myself!
IN CONCLUSION
Overall, I'm glad that I didn't let the doubt control me and I actually ended up really enjoying this book! Filled with enjoyable characters, humor, and a ship to root for, this was a very unexpected read. I do recommend it and I am definitely continuing the series! I need to see more of my ship!

Jessica has always known she is adopted. Her parents, the Packwoods, have told her the story of how they, as anthropologists, were studying her family in Romania when they were attacked. Jessica's birth parents begged the Packwoods to take their daughter to safety. Eventually, Jessica's birth parents and many others of her family are killed and the Packwoods return to the United States with a new baby.

Jessica hates the story. She hates the fact that her parents were the kind of freaks that anthropologists wanted to study in the first place and how her birth name sounds so ethnic and strange. Antanasia - what kind of name is that?

Jessica starts to get a little freaked out when she sees a strange and mysterious guy watching her from afar. At the same time, she starts hearing her birth name whispered in the air. Antanasia... When the same strange and mysterious guy shows up at school, she doesn't know what to think. It turns out he is an exchange student named Lucius Vladescu. When Jessica points him out to her mother and tells her how he gives off a weird vibe, she doesn't seem too surprised to see him. Jessica's mother even invites him home for dinner to talk.

All of this happens within the first 17 pages of the book.

Jessica (Antanasia) is a Romanian vampire princess who was betrothed to Lucius when they were born. The promise of their marriage has held their two clans, the Dragomirs and the Vladescus, in a tentative peace for years. If the wedding doesn't take place, there will be a large-scale war which will most likely lead to the destruction of the Dragomirs.

Jessica has a difficult time believing any of this. She has a hard time believing anything that can't be explained logically. Lucius attempts to win her over, while Jessica attempts to live her life like normal - pretending she isn't a vampire princess.

Both Jessica and Lucius go through major changes in the novel. They have time to examine their true feelings about family and duty. Beth Fantaskey does an excellent job keeping the reader guessing until the very end. You will constantly be reassessing your opinion about how the story will end. Personally, I found myself getting very nervous as I was getting toward the end of the book and I still thought there was so much that needed to happen.

Luckily, Fantaskey does a brilliant job tying up loose ends. JESSICA'S GUIDE TO DATING ON THE DARK SIDE could easily be the beginning of a series (I don't know if there will be a sequel or not), but it can also work as a great stand-alone novel.

JESSICA'S GUIDE TO DATING ON THE DARK SIDE has become one of my new favorite young adult vampire novels. I know I'll be reading it again.

Age R: 12+ (It says 14 and up but I really don't think it's inappropriate for ages twelve and thirteen, but I suppose it will be more interesting for people 14+)
Release Date: February 2009
Thoughts: Now this story is original! It is NOT your typical love/vampire story. I really recommend this one it's a nice, short read :) you will be rooting for this cute couple as you're reading the book. Doesn't the beautiful cover alone compel you to just go out and buy the book when it comes out? I'm sure the answer to that is yes hehe
Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side is the story of a girl(senior in high school) who finds out that she has a fiance, a guy who just so happens to be a VERY hot vampire named Lucius. Not only that but it turns out she's a Romanian princess. The guy is such an a-hole! How can she possibly end up marrying him? She's never even been kissed yet she's expected to marry a vampire!
I loved the story! It really got me hooked from the start and would not let go. Oh and I certainly got attached to the main hot vampire, Lucius. :)
The writing, the characters, everything about this book is great! I can't wait to read more from Beth Fantaskey because that girl can write a story! This book is a stand alone story so you will definitely be sad once it's over.
