This book is just over 200 pages, yet it took me 132 pages to finally figure out was going on. The languages and customs and lifestyle are so foreign tome, I found it very difficult to grasp. Reminded me of Animal Farm and Life of Pei.
A widowed English teacher, eight young girls, and a sailor John Dollar are alone and threatened on a remote island off the coast of Burma in this fourth novel from Marianne Wiggins. Compelling, disturbing, and seductive, John Dollar is a haunting tale, a literacy tour de force, and a major work of fiction from a talented and provocative writer.
