The Joy of Cooking: All About Cookies is an excellent resource for the home baker. I'm a novice at best, but the recipes are written very clearly and seem easy to follow. I write "seem" because I'm about to make my first batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. There aren't many ingredients, and most are found around the kitchen anyways. I'm wary of cookbooks that assume the reader is an expert and for one recipe I would end up buying 4 new ingredients I won't use again. This book isn't like it.

Great photographs and the book was a Joy to read as well.
