This book was a bit darker than some I've read by this author. Less romance and more political intrigue. Lots of lopping off of heads, poisonings, and throwing women into the water(in a rock filled sack).

This is a new favorite. It is truly an epic novel with several generations envolved. A good read since you feel you now know them all.

My FAVORITE Bertrice Small! All that's good about her books, with plenty of harem intrigue, political positioning and hot romance!

This book provides a magical and sometimes bizarre reading experience, IMHO.
THE KADIN is (appropriately) divided into five segments. From my personal viewpoint, each segment had a different "reading feel" of its own.
Embark into this particular reading journey with your eyes wide open. Forget all your pre-conceived expectations of what a "love story" novel should deliver. This book does not follow convention, it breaks some of Romancelandia's capital rules.
There has been enough written in other reviews about plot development, historical content, etc.. Suffices to say that to me, the first three parts of the book had more of the intense, "can't put it down", awesome storytelling flavor than the last two. Although the last two parts were not necessarily uninteresting, they do move slower and include some unnecessary repetition. There is a bit too much "angst" for my taste. Lots of heartbreak and even what I perceived as character development inconsistencies.
Overall, this is a book worth reading.

One of Small's earlier and better historical dramas.

This book was very well written. Once I started reading I had a hard time putting it down. The character development was amazing. I like reading books that are uplifting and make me feel good/happy when I get to the ending and that wasn't the case with this one.
Abducted from a life of privilege, she was sold into slavery in a distant land. For Lady Janet Leslie, there would be no escaping the harem of the wealthy and powerful Sultan Selim. But from the moment the handsome ruler spied his breathtaking "Cyra," he was captivated-enflamed by the fiery desire that coursed through his veins. She belonged to him, body and soul-yet it was he who was enslaved.
continual action and surprises a great read.
Very good book. Bertrice Small has a way with history that compells you to keep reading. I find it very difficult to put her books down. I loved the story about Cyra. I have read many of her other books which mention her and it was great to finally read about the historical matriarch.
History, remarkable story telling powers, of Bertrice Small. Romantic past, Lady Janet Leslie abducted into slavery, was she enslaved or the sultan?
Historical romance.
Wonderful - a classic!
I couldn't hardly put this one down!
