Helpful Score: 3
This is a horrific story of childhood neglect and abuse, and dumbfounding in that it happened to many children in Ireland during this time. The writing lacks the humor that graces Angela's Ashes and the powerful spirit of A Child Called It; in fact, the author comes across as bitter and angry. Such emotions are more than understandable - in fact, it's difficult to imagine a survivor of such a childhood not being overcome with such feelings - but the result is a rather flat tale of devastating abuse rather than an uplifting triumph over horrendous circumstances.

This is not a review but a warning. This author has been discredited by her family and many newspapers. This story did not happen to her. It is unclear whether it is a collection of accounts taken from real stories the author had heard about or if it is pure fiction.
