Excellent tale about Wilton McCleary, a detective in old Philadelphia. This is the first of Mark Graham's series about Wil. McCleary is a somewhat tormented man, a survivor of the Andersonville prison from the Civil War. He is basically honest and tries to do the right thing in the face of corruption. In this book, he tries to find the kidnappers of a prize winning rat fighting dog, and later, the kidnappers of a small boy. Events coverge, and Wil has a hard time of it. I really liked this book.

First in the Old Philadelphia Mystery Series...generally would appeal to a male reader more than to a female reader.

As the United States tries to recover from the War Between the States, the city of Philadelphia is undergoing changes of its own. But when Civil War veteran-turned-detective Wilton McCleary searches for a valuable dog and a missing child, he is introduced to another side of the Quaker City where cruelty is cheap and the secrets of the past are best left undisturbed.

This book reminded me of Sam Spade... it was ok, but I didn't care for the way it was writen!
