This is the first Gerard novel I couldn't finish. It was really slow and maybe a bit too detailed in areas it didn't need to be. I felt like I was forcing my way through a very boring book and decided to give up more than 1/3 of the way through.
Even with a slow plot, sometimes the characters can save the book for me. Mike was a reoccurring character in her Black Ops series so I was quite excited to read his backstory here. Unfortunately the main characters were really inconsistent. I mostly have a problem with Eva. I just don't get the impetus behind her need to drug and kidnap Mike. For a "smart" lady, she couldn't find a way around it? I could see it if she has been shut down by him multiple times and leaving her with no other choice but she has never even met this guy. What were her plans for him if he turned out to be a horrible man? Kill him? She does a lot of other stupid things as well not worth mentioning.
It's fine to have a tortured main character as an alcoholic on a bender but then follow through. After the initial introduction of that part of Mike's character trait, it was never mentioned again.
There were absolutely no spark between Mike and Eva other then Gerard telling you there is. There was no connection between them. On top of all this, the dialogue was dry.
I can see other people really enjoying this book though, just not me. Hated it.
