A short historical novel for children, set in 15th Century Korea. Kee-sup excels at making kites, his younger brother Young-Sup excels at flying them. They come to the attention of the boy King, who must order them to treat him as another boy, not as a god, while they teach him about kite-flying, and later represent him in the New Years' kite-fighting competition. Young-Sup, the younger brother, also resents the greater attention given to Kee-Sup, the eldest child. An enjoyable read about a period and country not often found in children's books
One of the wonderful things about historical novels for youth is the amount of actual fact so interestingly presented. The Kite Fighters is one of the best of this genre. Presents a lot of facts about early Korea as well as a story everyone can enjoy.
This book is interesting both for its insight into years-ago Korean culture and as a story of two brothers who come to accept their personal strengths and weaknesses.
