I was a bit conflicted when I first heard about this book, I mean, a werewolf DJ named, of all things, Kitty? - but I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised and I'm now looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

Kitty makes a believable journey from progressive midnight DJ to late night talk show host of the weird and wacky. The author's delivery and developement of her world is charming and competent. Its not as dark as Laurel Hamilton's series, but not nearly as light and fluffy as Mary Janice Davidson's Undead world...maybe about the level of the Charlaine Harris Southern Vampire novels, though it takes itself more seriously.

There are a couple of shadowed anti-heroes (Rick the semi friendly Vampire, helping Kitty for his own mysterious reasons; and a human bounty hunter, a sort of warmer fuzzier version of Laurel Hamilton's Edward, the bounty hunter who often makes appearances in the Anita Blake series) whose stories I hope will be more developed and whose paths will cross Kitty's again in future.

A good read, well worth the time, and I can only hope the author's world will be even better realized in future!

I was very surprised by how much I liked this book! I wasn't too sure what to expect, not knowing all that much about werewolves and all. But the author turned the tables on me, and created such a fantastic and believable world that I was sucked right in. I loved how Kitty grew and matured as a person (and a werewolf) and how she always does what she thinks is right, even if it may get her butt kicked. I liked the dynamics of the wolf pack and how everyone behaved accordingly. Her relationships are important to her, her friends are family.
I'm interested in seeing more of Cormac, the werewolf hunter, he seems like he could pop up again when Kitty needs a hand.
I'll be looking for more of Kitty's adventures!

This was a pretty decent start to a new series, and I'm looking forward to reading it's followup, Kitty Goes to Washington, which I have here in my TBR as well.

Kitty and the Midnight Hour definitely sets up the situation for the sequel, where paranormals are finally recognized by the masses, and the Government releases scientific reports proving their existence. But in this book, most of the population doesn't yet believe, and both vamps and werewolves remain in the closet, hiding their true identity, and if they cannot do that, hiding from humanity completely.

Kitty's radio show, The Midnight Hour, which starts off as a fluke phone call taken over the air, becomes tremendously popular and is syndicated around the US. Other paranormals, as well as humans, appreciate Kitty's show since it allows them to call in with questions, or simply to talk about certain subjects, particularly if it's something they cannot discuss with their alpha or master. But The Midnight Hour also makes Kitty a target in other ways...

The premise: Kitty Norville is a late night radio DJ and secretly two years into being a werewolf. One night she idly mentions a Bat Boy article, and this kicks off an impromptu talk show on creatures of the night. Suddenly, a weekly show about the supernatural is born. Kitty calls it The Midnight Hour, and it's a big success. Of course, not everyone is happy, like Arturo the head of the local vampire coven or Carl and Meg, her werewolf pack alpha and his mate, but Kitty finds herself increasingly proud of her show and will do anything to keep it.

Quite an enjoyable read - worth a try for all urban fantasy fans. Although there are some dark moments and grey areas which may turn off others, I breezed through this fairly fast, and I'm glad that I have the second book waiting. While this ended in a good place, there is definitely a lot more that you want to find out. Kitty and the Midnight Hour lays down the foundation. The world building is such that you understand what is going on, but you know that there is more, and you want to keep reading to find out what else is there.

Kitty Norville is a relatively new werewolf who is resigned to her status at the bottom of the pack. She tries to stay in touch with her human side because of the positives including music, and hosts a late night radio show during which she can play her favorites and takes listener requests. One night a called seems more interested in discussing vampires than Siouxsie and the Banshees, and her discussion with the caller results in an unprecedented interest in the show. Her music show quickly turns into a Dr. Phil for the supernatural. The show's popularity grows, much to the disapproval of Kitty's pack leader, who does not like the exposure Kitty's show brings to their secret world. He also does not like changes success brings Kitty, who he is accustomed to using and bullying as is accepted in werewolf society. Ultimately her radio show jeopardizes her relationship with her pack and even her life.

I enjoyed this book very much because instead of focusing on action and romance Kitty and the Midnight Hour focuses on its character's development. Kitty is a likable heroine who you will find yourself cheering for by the end of the book. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

I liked the premise of this book but the more I read, the less I liked Kitty. She was a victim pretty much throughout the book. She has a few standout moments but ultimately she whines and someone else saves her or cleans up after her. I realize that the author was trying to show her making a transition from a victim to a strong and empowered person, but she fell short. In the end, Kitty had not evolved very much.

CONTAINS SPOILERS*** I really enjoyed the world building, but was troubled by Kitty's choices for the hero in this book. Maybe the problem is that I'm used to romance, but her options are the alpha male who forces her to have sex with him, the bounty hunter who tries to kill her, the gay best friend who ends up dead, and 2 other mystery figures she is unable to contact. I get it that this book was about her finding her independence, and by the end you can see the bounty hunter is actually a pretty good guy, but it's just a lot darker than what I'm used to.

Halfway through, I wondered why I was bothering to finish this when I really didn't care for Kitty very much. I understood the arc the writer was trying to take her through - having her start out submissive and learn how to find her inner strength - but without liking her heroine, the journey becomes meaningless. I stuck with it because I liked a number of the secondary characters - Cormac, Hardin, TJ - and was curious about where the author would take them. Though I got my answers, I didn't necessarily like them very much, and the open non-ending angered me more than intrigued me into reading more.

Enjoyed reading it and have already started on the next book in the series (Kitty Goes to Washington). Thought the author could have gone into more detail about Kitty "coming out" and the repercussions on the rest of society, but other than glossing over on that aspect of the story, I found it fun to read. Hope to see the characters fleshed-out a bit more in the next book.

An interesting idea. Kitty is a closeted werewolf and a latenight radio dj who starts a call-in show for 'creatures of the night', in a world where they are generally all in hiding and not believed in by normal humans. It was kind of a fun read but I didn't find it realistic enough to be satisfying.

I just started this series also and like you wasn't immediately drawn to Kitty.(I have been quick to realize that the author has to have room for the character to grow and mature) Kitty was way too weak and needy. Well, after a week things have changed. I just started book 4(at 2:30 this morning after finishing book 3)and the world of Kitty has rocked. Kitty has grown and matured wonderfully. She has become a kick-ass heroine with balls of steel(although she still has her moments of self doubt) The deeper I get into this series the more I love it. It's not all about werewolves, this is an equal opportunity paranormal creature series. I hate that it is suppose to end at book 9 but at least I'll be along for the ride. A 5 star series that will suck you in completely.

Every girl wants something that they can call their very own without answering to others about it. Never mind what their family, friends, or in this case pack thinks. Kitty Norville, a female deejay, that became an instant star with a radio talk show that got started out of sheer boredom. With her show being syndicated, and playing in so many markets, it was only a matter of time before Kitty had to out herself, and admit to being a werewolf. From that moment on the plot jumps by bounds and bounds, with Kitty naturally finding herself in the middle of much!

I really enjoyed this book, and I was able to relate to the character. A normal girl, living a not so normal life. I look forward to reading Kitty goes to Washington.

I liked this book much more than I thought I would. The back and front covers lead me to believe that this book was a quick "fluffy" read. I was wrong, there is a lot of suspence and a story line that had me hooked. Kitty is much more than your average werewolf. I have learned to "never judge a book by it's cover" ;)

This is the first book I have read by Carrie Vaughn and also the first book in the ongoing Kitty Norville series. The writing style and story remind me a lot of Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson series. This is more of a paranormal action/drama type of book than a paranormal romance (for those of us who are picky with the type of paranormal book we read).

Kitty Norville is a DJ. She was attacked and turned into a werewolf previously and has been trying to live normally while partaking in pack life. She has been increasingly drawn to being awake night hours and subbing in for the overnight shift at the radio station she works at suites this perfectly. One night she takes some calls about paranormal activity and this really makes her program take off. Suddenly her program Kitty and the Midnight Hour, is being syndicated country-wide. Only this is making certain people very unhappy (mainly leaders in the supernatural community). Kitty is struggling to keep her place in her werewolf pack, as well as keep her radio show running, amoungst this all there are rumors about there being a cure for both werewolves and vampirism so she is trying to figure that out too.

This was a quick read. It is well-written. It is very very similar to Patricia Briggs writing style; in fact I think I might have trouble distinguishing between them. While this was an entertaining read on the plane; I didn't find it that exciting. The action scenes are mediocre, nothing that exciting happens, and the world (thus far) is something we have seen a million times before. Vampires and werewolves don't like each other, werewolf packs are male dominant, the paranormal community is on the edge of coming out, maybe.

Kitty herself is not a very inspiring character. Maybe she will become more in a few books. None of the side characters were all that interesting either. I thought this book was okay, but mostly boring. I happen to have the next three books in the series, so I will definitely read at least the next book. Just be warned that this is one of those books that sets you up for a long series, in and of itself it is not that interesting of a book. I actually thought the Mercy Thompson series was better and I wasn't really that big on that series either. Personally I have really enjoyed Jaz Parks and the Signs of the Zodiac series a lot more.

One of the things I enjoy the most about Paperback Swap is that it gives me the chance to try authors and books I probably would never have found on my own. Some turn out to be less than what I expected, but others -- like Kitty and the Midnight Hour -- turn out to be so much more. What a pleasant surprise this book was! I finished it in record time because I had such a hard time putting it down. It's well written, with an interesting plot and a main character that has a lot of appeal. The sections of the story when she is in worlf form are quite graphic, but then she's a wolf, so what do you expect? (Frankly, I kind of skipped over some of them, and it didn't ruin the story!) I see that the other books in the series aren't currently available, so I may end up buying the others if I have to wait too long. Yes, it's that good!

In Carrie Vaughn's Kitty and the Midnight Hour, book one in the Kitty Norville series, main character Kitty Norville works as a late night radio DJ and has great taste in music. These late nights fit well into her new nature as a werewolf. One night in between songs, a caller phones in and begins a discussion about the paranormal. Since this is something that Kitty understands very well, she answers. More people begin to call in claiming to be vampires or werewolves, or humans with vampire/werewolf concerns. Pretty soon Kitty is running her own late night talk and advice show for the paranormal called The Midnight Hour. Her pack leader, the Alpha Male Carl, is upset by this exposure of their kind. Upset even more is local Vampire Family leader Arturo who feels that she will upset the balance of his power by giving out advice to vampires. Both leaders want Kitty to stop the show, but Carl is begrudgingly willing to let Kitty go ahead with it for a cut of the profits. Though she is a weak werewolf, she is a strong talk show host and for the first time since she became a werewolf, Kitty is feeling independent and happy.

But if good times were made to last, the book wouldn't be nearly as exciting as it is. First a werewolf hunter is sent to kill her, exposing her for what she is live on air. Second, there is a rash of killings that were obviously done by a werewolf. As the resident paranormal expert, Kitty is brought in by the police to scope out the crime scenes, but Kitty does not recognize the scent of this werewolf and knows he is not one of her pack-- he is a rouge in their territory mutilating young human women. Third, a church is claiming to 'cure' paranormal creatures and everyone who goes there for help seems to disappear. Fourth, things within the pack itself have become a bit tense. Carl is making moves and suggesting she try to take the place of the Alpha Female Meg, her own maker Zan is becoming aggressive, and someone is working against her to get her killed by the hot werewolf hunter. How can a women so consumed by problems possibly give advice to others?

Kitty is certainly not infallible. She is definitely not a tough girl capable of beating up men twice her size complete with roundhouse kicks like so many paranormal heroines. Sure, she is stronger than even a powerful human male, but she doesn't go around flaunting it. Kitty just wants to be normal. Even as a wolf she is submissive and uncertain, deferring to Carl as the Alpha Male as any wolf would do by instinct. Vaughn seems to have a good understanding of the hierarchical dynamics of wolf packs, which makes the book more realistic in terms of how werewolves as creatures would behave. I think too many authors are afraid to make submissive female characters for fear of playing into the stereotypes of women, and therefore realism suffers. Vaughn found a way to make Kitty real but also strong in her own way.

There are many different plots and conflicts going on at once. Vaughn balances all of the issues very well, putting together a story that is fluid and easy to follow without becoming a tangled mess. Kitty is dealing with a lot of complicated stuff, but you don't feel overwhelmed by everything while reading. It all comes together in the end in a very intense scene, but the resolution is left open in certain ways to allow for the rest of the series to proceed. I have to admit that I like books that come in a series much better than stand alone novels.

Usually, when given the choice of vampire or werewolf, I always choose vampire. Most werewolf characters are too animalistic and it is hard to relate to them. Yet Vaughn makes Kitty someone easy to understand and find commonalities with. So now I can say that there is at least one werewolf book that honestly enjoy. I enjoyed it most of all because of the flowing way Vaughn made her wolves human but wolf at the same time, never too much of either and certainly not just the best of both worlds. I am definitely excited to read the rest of the series.

If you are a fan of paranormal romance, this book isn't for you. This is more paranormal mystery. Well written but I admit I was pretty bored for the first few chapters. I read second book, too, and probably won't read more. I prefer books with a romantic interest.

Loved Kitty and the Midnight Hour, and am looking forward to picking up more of Carrie Vaughn's "Kitty Norville" series.
This was a quick, very entertaining read. Not a typical vampire romance; more Joss Whedon meets Stephenie Meyer, and not so much Anne Rice. It's fun to get lost in the complications of life as a crime-fighting werewolf talk-radio host!

If I am going to invest some serious time in a book series like this I need there to be two features to keep me satisfied: 1) the suggestion of a complex and detailed world which provides an occasional diversion from the primary plot, and 2) a unique take on the usual mythos, something unexpected, something more than the standard bag of cliche. Given those two features, I am willing to travel a few hundred pages while clumsy plot points are thrown at me. I am therefore not the ideal reader for the Kitty Norville series. I even read the second book in the series, in case the Midnight Hour was simply overworked to satisfy the publisher. It is all pretty vanilla.

I liked Kitty. She struggles with her need to be subordinate as part of the pack because as time goes on she wants to be more independent. She works as a D.J. and turned her show into a talk radio show about things that go bump in the night and eventually outs herself as a werewolf which brings all kinds of things down on her head - some good, some bad. In the end she goes on the run, doing her show as she travels from town to town.

I like it when the writer makes you really feel the emotions of the character and the descriptions of where she or he is at in the story so you almost feel like your right there. If you are looking for something that you don't need to think, but you just want a good basic super-natural storyline, this would be a good book to get. Some of these genre over-sex the entire book and this one didn't have any of that - I would be fine letting my daughters read this book.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed this book and have already ordered the second in the series. It is the story of a young female werewolf that starts a late night radio talk show that centers around duscussions of werewolves, vampires and the supernatural. In my opinion it was very reminiscent of Janet Evanovich (the Stephanie Plum books) by with a supernatural twist. There are fights between werewolves, werewolves versus vampires, werewolves and vampires versus the christian right and werewolves versus the police. There are also some steamy scenes; Kitty seems to have the hots for various men - other werewolves, vampires, and a werewolf/vampire assasin. It was really just a quick, fun read.

I liked the "were" side of the book. Nice chance from all the "vamp" stuff out there. Vaughn does a good job making us believe the struggle between human and wolf behavior. Liked the whole Kitty as midnight DJ. The ending wasn't as satisfying as I would have liked. Too much wait-for-the-next-book left undone stuff. Vaughn is a funny writer, but doesn't slide into inane one-liner quips (which can get VERY tiresome).

After devouring all of the available Sookie Stackhouse novels, I went looking for suggestions of similar books with a female protagonist and vampires. This series ended up at the top of my list. As I started this book, I thought I'd found a winner, but by the time I finished it, I had already decided not to put the second book on my queue.

As a stand-alone, this is a pretty entertaining book. I liked Kitty, and Vaughn builds an interesting supernatural world (with a few new elements and an inventive, subversive explanation of werewolf culture). Unfortunately, there were enough missing details to slowly shift me as a reader from belief to nitpicking (seriously, Vaughn needed to do a little more observation of a radio show at work).

Without spoiling the ending of the book, though, it seems to set up a formula for the rest of the series, and leaves Kitty as the only reoccurring character. Major drawback and not what I'm looking for in a book series. I was ready to fall in love with a new batch of characters and a new series, but this book just didn't take me there.
