Duel McClain has lost everything he holds dear four years before -- his wife and his son. However, in Cactus Springs, Texas he gets into a poker game where the stakes include a baby. When he wins, Duel is clueless how to take care of the tyke. Soon after, a rider comes up to Duel's evening fire and it is a woman who has been severely beaten. Duel asks her to travel with him to Tranquility, Texas to help him care for the baby and that he will pay for the woman to go anywhere she wants. Duel plans to give the baby to his married sister.

However, when he gets to Tranquility, he finds that his sister has a houseful of kids of her own. By then, Jessie Foltry has started to grow on Duel. He knows that he needs to earn some money quickly because Jessie is going to need a lawyer; she has murdered her husband.

The pages turned quickly because the two major characters were engaging. I did wonder why lawyer Tom Parker forgave his son-in-law so easily. Perhaps Tom was susceptible to Marley Rose's charms. I thought that the reason was rather weak.
