Kristen by Dawn Klinge is book nine in the Apron Strings series. The series is united by a copy of "Mrs. Canfield's Cookery Book" for the Modern Woman as it moves through the decades. Kristen is set in 2002.

After graduating with a Master's degree, Kristen is uncertain about her next chapter. She wants to work for a major publishing house, but several applications have been rejected. She impulsively agrees to manage the bookstore where she's worked part-time while the owner is away. Although stressful, Kristen finds she really enjoys running the store. She hires Josh as a part-time bookstore employee, and their relationship progresses from coworkers to friends to more.

The writing style of this book is straightforward, definitely more âtellâ than âshowâ with very little emotion, even during scenes when significant feelings are revealed.

My favorite aspect was the cookbook's integration into the plot; it was much more significant than in another book in the series I read. I'm seldom tempted to try recipes included in novels, but I'll definitely make the chocolate chip scones that are important to this story.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this novel; all opinions in this review are my own.
