Did you see the fantastically huge 'face' on the surface of Mars when you watched the Viking probe's films in 1976? Huge, awe-ful, and . . . puzzling, wasn't it?
Allen Steele, author of ORBITAL DECAY, THE JERICHO ITERATION , LUNAR DESCENT, and CLARKE COUNTY, SPACE among other titles, took off with the idea of that huge face on Mars, and came up with a fascinating scenario.
What if some aliens wanted to contact us humans? What if they wanted us to come to them? Is the giant face the type of 'road sign' they'd leave to point us in the right direction?
And would it be the right direction for us humans, or only the right direction for the aliens?
