The three widowed 60-something women who lend "golden girl" power to Medlicott's episodic debut would be very much at home in Jan Karon's Mitford. Amelia, Hannah and Grace all live in a Pennsylvania boardinghouse, unhappily confronting the insults and injuries involved in aging. When Amelia inherits a deteriorating farmhouse in Covington, N.C., the three decide to move in together, gearing up to rehabilitate both the farmhouse and their lives. Although their alternately neglectful and overprotective grown children are disgruntled at their mothers' unconventional new lifestyle, the women find the time to become themselves, enjoying a combination of companionship and independence. Between gardening, cooking and exploring photography, the spunky trio jointly weather many trials and adventures including flood, fire, a claim on their property and romance. Medlicott's penchant for detailing local sights as minutely as a tourist map, coupled with the slow-lane pace, may be too warm and cozy for those accustomed to more action, and events that are surprising to the characters may be mundane to more sophisticated readers. But Medlicott's idea is a winner: women in their twilight years finding alternatives to large group homes or living alone. Solving an all-too-common housing dilemma, the three ladies inspire by forming a community in which they thrive and find new careers and loves, all with dignity and autonomy.

A wonderful story of three women who shrug aside the assigned title of "elderly" and begin to enjoy their lives. Wonderful story and representation of women willing to live the lives they want, together. First of a series.

This is my first "Covington" i have read. It is also the first in a series. It is absolutely charming. If you enjoy comfy reads, then this is one to try. Three women living in a depressing rooming house with a nosey & crabby landlady become very close friends and decide that since their grown children have no time for them, they will look out for each other. In the process they come to Covington and remodel a rundown house and move in together. Their adult children think they are crazy and reckless, they "KNOW" they are happy making a new life and friends. I loved this story. It was written very well with page turning suspense, you just need to read "one more page" before you can make dinner. The respect they learn for each other and the love is awsome. This was a perfect read and proves you don't have to be blood sisters to become sisters.

This was all that I had hoped it was. Many, many life-lessons can be taken from this book. It delighted and sobbered me at the same time. I hope to find the second book in this series through PBS soon.

Book 1 in the Ladies of Covington series. A friend had recommended this series some time ago, but I just finished the first book. Loved it. Three senior ladies meet up in a senior's boarding house and take on life's challenges: leaving and moving to a new state, driving on an interstate for the first time above 40MPH, learning to live together and independently for the first time in quite a while. I look forward to the next book. Reminiscent of the Mitford series in many ways.

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book; in my opinion, it is a truly delightful story. This was certainly easy reading for me, but there was just enough going on in the plot to hold my attention all the way through the story. While this isn't completely a 'fluffy, feel good' story, I appreciated that it also wasn't entirely dark and depressing - I would give this book an A!
