Published in 2004, this is the 3rd book in the Bastion Club Novels. One thing I like about this series is that so far, you can read the books in any order.
Stephanie Laurens is always enjoyable.
This book has an interesting, fairly complex plot. It is easy to identify with the main characters in the book. The love scenes are driven by emotions, rather than techniques.

The third book in the Bastion Club series about Charles St Austell using his seductive charms on Lady Penelope Selborne, neighbor and ex-lover. While their romance is playing out, Charles uncovers a spy network and unmasked an assassin intent on killing all Selbornes, including his future wife.

Very good book. One of my favorites.
Great book in the series.
A Bastion Club novel. Charles St. Austell meets his match in a wild ride of lost love refound, family secrets, spies, murder & mayhem.
Wonderfully romantic escapism novel. The Bastion Club is a group of English gentlemen returned from the wars with Napoleon who all must marry. They form the Bastion Club and buy a residence in which to meet and share info on prospective brides and which debutantes and managing future mothers-in-laws to avoid. Of course there are mysteries which lead them to meet women they most likely would never have met in Almack's Assembly Room. The struggle between strong willed men and women ensue with lots of torrid romance thrown in.
book three in this series about Charles St. Austell. All seven books are good. Ya gotta love the spy stories.
Another great story from Stephanie Laurens, the third book from the Bastion Club Series. A strong willed couple trying to deal with the past, complete with family secrets, spies, smugglers and murder.
Good read if you enjoy series books.
Good read if you enjoy series books.
Not my favorite book in the series. Charles is a great male lead but the plot is kind of slow and Penelope is just like the other female characters from the series - so stubborn that they insist on doing everything and walking right into danger instead of using common sense and staying out of the way.
I have the whole series(all 16)Wish had gotten them in hard back so they won't wear out so fast. This is a series I will read over and over again.
I love every book I've read by Stephanie Laurens. She has a great sense of humor and her series are connected nicely.
I really enjoy this series (Bastion Club.) I like that the characters are strong. I also like the background mystery that is interwoven. It makes the story (for me) more interesting than just the romance. Great characters, nice history.

Stephanie Laurens writes great romance books, and this is no exception.
My son chewed the corner of the book somewhat. He didn't get as far as the words so you can still read it all.
Impatient to find his bride-to-be yet appaled by the damsels of the ton, Charles St. Justell leaps at the chance to help his ex-commander Dalziel by investigating rumors of spies operating yia smuggling gangs near Charle's Cornwall home. The first strange thing Charles discovers is Lady Penelope Selborn, neighbor and ex-lover, marching through his house after midnight. Years ago, Charles and Penny shared one fabulously passionate interlude, but ever since, she's managed to avoid him. Now Charles uncovers a web of Selborne family secrets and a spy network others are also searching for-and trapped in the middle is Penny, the one lady he had never ceased wanting for his own.
But twist follows twist and nothing is what it seemed-Charles has his hands full unraveling the truth about the spying, unmasking an assassin intent on killing all Selbornes, including Penny, while simultaneously convincing that independent lady that she and only she will do for him-and he for her.
In true Bastion Club style, with a little help from his friends, Charles triumphs an all counts.

The seven members of the Bastion Club have served loyally in the perilous service of the Crown.
Now they've banded together to support one another through their most dangerous mission of all:
getting married.
When Charles St. Austell returns home to claim his title as earl, and to settle quickly on a
suitable wife as well, he discovers that experience has made him impatient of the young ladies
who vie for his attention -- with the exception of Lady Penelope Selborne. Years ago, Charles
and Penelope's youthful ardor was consummated in an unforgettable afternoon. Charles is still
haunted by their interlude, but Penny refuses to have anything more to do with him.
If controlling her heart was difficult before, resisting a stronger, battle-hardened Charles is
well nigh impossible, yet Penelope has vowed she won't make the same mistake twice, nor will she
marry without love. But when a traitorous intrigue draws them together, then ultimately
threatens them both -- will Penny discover she has a true protector in Charles, her first and
only love, who now vows to make her his own? The `who done it' murder mystery plot of the story
will keep your mind contriving trying to out wit the author between the love scenes. Charles and
Penny constantly share their ideas and are basically honest with each in their joint efforts to
clear her family name and find a brutal murderer and spy. Therefore, leaving little room for
blatant deceptions (lies), allows them to `go hand and glove' in impromptu situations they face
during their investigations.
This is definitely a "deep read" - more than the surface of words in a book...mysteries of the
heart's desires and yearning for the other half of its soul mate to "complete" the longing to be
loved as no other can possibly do.
