Katelin,
Goose bumps...
“Thank you for meeting me so late,” Sophia jumped off the tall wrought iron gate. “This is a hell of a place to meet for a late night chat,” Isabella called after her. “It’s quiet.” “It’s creepy” Isabella said as she finally made it over the gate. “And why couldn’t we just meet at your house, like we normally do?” “I told you, I don’t need my mother hearing my every thought.” Sophia silently led the way through the sea of stones, past the wall of names that gave tribute to the fallen soldiers of the latest war. She felt she had to remain quiet, as though they were in a library. “Why so quiet?” “Respect” was all Sophia whispered into the dead silence. She led Isabella to her favorite spot, a small, dark clearing under a large weeping willow. She sat at the base of the tree and put her head in her hands. Isabella stared down at her with her arms crossed. “It’s Ethan, isn’t it?” “Sort of,” Sophia didn’t move. “Listen, I know you miss him Soph, but you can’t…” “It’s not that Izzy,” Sophia cut her off sharply. “Then what is it? Wait, he’s not…” Isabella stopped short looked toward the wall they passed moments earlier. “No, but he might be if I told him what I’m about to tell you.” Sophia lifted her head and wrapped her arms around her stomach. Looking at Isabella she whispered “You remember a couple months ago, just before he left, my last night with him?” “Of course I remember Soph.” “And I’m sure you have noticed I have been wearing baggy shirts lately,” she said softly taking off her sweatshirt. Isabella stopped and stared for a moment. She stood staring at Sophia’s stomach. “Oh my God, Sophia!” She rushed over and wrapped her arms around Sophia’s neck, careful not to hug her to tight. They stayed like this for a few moments and then both slid down the base of the tree, Sophia sitting with her head on Isabella’s shoulder. “I don’t know what to do Izzy,” Sophia wiped the tears that slid down her cheeks. “I can’t tell my parents, they already don’t like Ethan.” “Speaking of, have you talked to him?” “Well, yea, last week.” Sophia lifted her head, “But Izzy, I couldn’t tell him! I couldn’t do that to him.” “What to you mean, do that to him? What about what he did to you!” “I know, but he sees all those men over there who haven’t met their children! He told me once that he doesn’t know how he would be able to live with that! I just can’t tell him.” “Soph, he has to know!” “OK, I’ll tell him, but not yet. I need to figure out what I’m going to do first.” Sophia put her head back on Isabella’s shoulder. “It will be ok Soph, we will find a way to deal with this.” Izzy rubbed her hair, comforting her. “Thanks Izzy, I just need this problem, well,” Sophia looked around at her surroundings “laid to rest.” |
