I added the 'Baby Signs' book, because signing may have preceded use of the voice as the first human language. It would sure be fun to try it!

Schlink's The Reader brings to light how important reading is--even though those who read effortlessly often take reading for granted. Very enjoyable, even though I had already seen the movie version. The book is richer, and more believable.

Biemiller's book sounds interesting, but I can't accept any offers at this moment because I'm out of credits! What a pity!

There's a good discussion of T.K. Ann's 'Cracking the Chinese Puzzles' (a 5 vol. series, Out of Print?, and an abridgement) on: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/16261-cracking-the-chinese-puzzles-by-tk-ann/ I haven't examined these myself.

Comment added 3/18/11 by Ronald B. (jack-n-ivy-chinese) - , :
T. K. Ann's Cracking the Chinese Puzzles sounds like fun, I'll have to look for the 2 previous volumes on-line. My book on Chinese takes a 'crack the puzzle' approach, but is aimed at children 6-12 years old.

The Keys to Egypt (Adkins & Adkins) is bound to be a good read. I read their Empire of the Plains, really enjoyed it. I also receive their email newsletter covering all their investigative interests.

Comment added 3/13/11 by Ronald B. (jack-n-ivy-chinese) - , :
Susan Thompson's book 'Children as Illustrators' inspired me to write a little story about a catepillar and the moon today. I might make it a part of the book I'm writing. I'll make Jack the author of the story in my book.

Scribbling is just a form of babbling, just in a different medium.

Comment added 3/11/11 by Ronald B. (jack-n-ivy-chinese) - , :
Did you know that children of deaf parents babble with their hands? Provided they were exposed to sign language by their parents. They moved their hands in rhythmic patterns similar to those of signing adults! Falk, Finding our Tongues, page 143.

Comment added 3/6/11 by Ronald B. (jack-n-ivy-chinese) - , :
McCullough & McCullough's book sounds interesting, is it somewhat based/inspired by Spalding's book, The Writing Road to Reading? The titles being very similar can't be a coincidence.

Comment added 3/3/11 by Ronald B. (jack-n-ivy-chinese) - , :
If I remember right, Charles Yang's book, The Infinite Gift, made the point that speaking to children in 'motherese' is unnecessary to help children learn language. Falk, in Finding Our Tongues, has a good explanation of its role in our evolution.

Comment added 2/27/11 by Ronald B. (jack-n-ivy-chinese) - , :
Bucky's book is an eye-opener. He comments, among other things, that school might be useful for its socializing value, but children, given the learning materials they need, can actually learn better on their own!

Comment added 2/22/11 by Ronald B. (jack-n-ivy-chinese) - , :
Dr. Cytowic's book recounts his study of synesthesia, and shows how our senses are interconnected in ways which most of use find very counter-intuitive. An intriguing take on how our brains really function.
