A nice book is the most I can say. There are clearly problems with the pacing - there is a plodding to the narrative until about 4/5ths through, after which the author wraps up 25 years in a couple of chapters. (Did he get as tired of La as I did?) Although many women such as La probably existed in England in the 40s and 50s, I found her to be tiresome. Despite the author's accolades, La has no backbone whatsoever. I enjoyed the suppporting characters much better, especially Tim Hunney, Dr. Price, Mrs. Ag and Valerie. La seemed a little drab by comparision, and her grand love affair - pathetic.
