Excellent book. Although there was a little part near the middle that seemed to drag just a bit, I really enjoyed reading it.
The hero (Duncan) and the heroine (Margaret) meet by fate and with a short courtship, marry. This took up a good part of the story and afterwards would normally seem to be the end of the book, but the relationship continues to develop. And as has been the case with this series, the conflicts don't tend to arise simply because of lack of communication. Although it does cause some discomfort caused by "secrets", it doesn't control the majority of the story line. (That is a personal pet peeve of mine:)

It was refreshing to read one of these historical romances were the "hero" actively works are falling in love as a goal. Usually it seems it is something he does not want until it smacks him in the face.

I gave the book 5 stars because it is a great read and also a Mary Balogh series book. I have loved all Mary Balogh books since the Signet series.

I've read the first two books in the Huxtable Series but this one so far is my favorite. I could not put it down until I finished it. It is absolutely a wonderful story.

Great book! This is the first one I've read by this author and I loved it. It was not like your normal romance story - the woman was actually older and had more life experience; she was not a pushover. I like that the couple was actually friends first, letting love take its natural course. I highly recommend this book.
I could not put this book down. It is a easy read, you will love it!

Mary Balogh's Regency romances are pretty well known. This is one of the "Huxtable" series, which I don't, personally, like as well as her "Bedwyn" series. Neither series are very "historical," but they are enjoyable escape reads.

This is a really good romance story. I love her writing style. The sex scenes could be better and at the end the insecurities of the main characters was too repetitious and annoying. Overall though, it was a good and quick read for a romance lover like me.

I liked this much more than I expected to. I wasn't sure about Meg. She always seemed old, even when she was young. Her story didn't seem like it could be very romantic. But Balogh reveals the girl inside the woman who had to become mother to her siblings at a young age. She and Duncan have chemistry and while Balogh does her typical "pretend to be engaged" story, it was still fun to read. Duncan has a backstory that was pretty easy to guess but the resolution was nice and it was sweet how Meg helped him reconcile with his family.
Maybe I would have been more invested if I was reading the series in order, but it just felt very repetitive and predictable to me.
Best romance I've read in awhile, and I get lots from the library.
This is a do-not-miss if you are a MB fan. Written to her usual formula but with different details, but always a page turner.
Best of the series so far. Good characters with more plot and complexity and intrigue than in the first two installments of the Huxtable family. I really like Meg and Duncan - and Toby; really can't stand Crispin; was intrigued by Duncan's situation and really liked the situation as that unfolded. I enjoyed the complexity of this story. I look forward to Stephen's tale.

This was a great book. This is number three of four in the Huxtables siblings series. I have not read the first two books but this one stands completely alone. I will go back and read the first two books based on how much I liked this one. The series in order is:

Hooray! With the first three books of the Hustable Quintet, Ms. Balogh has finally and beautifully acknowledged the fact that sexual tension before marriage can be just as exciting, if not more, than the consumation - especially in 19th century England. This fits so much better with factual history than her other works where she imposes 21st century morality on 19th century society. Her writing is just as wonderful and these stories are just as riveting while actually being historically correct!
I read the first 80 pages and found some big holes in the character development. For example, the main character is "jilted" by her first love and when she finally runs into him after 12 years, we then learn her sister was married to the guy's brother. Umm, that seems like a weird coincidence. Are men at such a shortage? Some of the colloquialisms are not time appropriate, I thought, and the relationship between Duncan and Margaret was a bit too contrived. Not impressed.

This is the third book in the series but, unfortunately, was too similar to the first two to be really enjoyable. Was hard to get into and stay focused. Definitely not my favorite series of Mary Balogh.
Another wonderful book from Mary Balogh!
I really enjoyed reading the first and second Huxtable sisters books immensely. This was no exception. I can't wait for the next book about the youngest child, Stephen, to come out in paperback!

I now have read the first 3 Huxtable stories and can't wait to read Stephen's story. Mary Balogh brings the charictors to life. Meg's story was even better then the first 2 books and I loved both Nessie and Kate, mousey Meg turned out not to be mousey at all
Mary Balogh does it again with this great book. The details and characters are realistic, ones we come to love. The book may be read before reading the first 2 in this series. Be alert to some sexual scenes described, but these can easily be skipped.

The series about the Huxtable family are the best that Mary Balogh has done since the "Slightly" books, imho. And this is my favorite of the series so far.
