Gosh did this book ever open my eyes. I knew coal mining was dangerous, but in 1958 it was even more so. Ms. Greene captures the experience of being trapped in the absolute night of a failed coal mine that you can almost see the pale beams of dying headlamps and taste the last sip of coal laced drinking water. This book is brutally detailed of this absurdity and of this distasters aftermath. This book will make you savor daylight in a way you never have-unless of course you are already a coal miner. There are diagrams and pictures and Ms Greenes words won't leave you for a long time, if ever after reading this.
