Excellent page-turner with some surprising twists. David Baldacci has a knack for writing a story as if it's a puzzle, and giving us one piece at a time while developing complex characters and situations. By the end of the book you have all the puzzle pieces and have completely enjoyed watching them be put together.

One of my favorite authors, he never disappoints! This is the 2nd book about a new hero, Amos Decker, a penniless overweight ex cop who has hyperthymestic syndrome and can forget nothing. He is hired by the FBI for a special task force investigating cold cases. Decker's mind is fascinating as he looks into the case of a former football player Melvin Mars on death row convicted of murdering his parents and was just pardoned from execution after someone else confessed to the crime.

Decker and Mars become good friends as they investigate the reason Mars was framed for the murder and the twists and turns were compelling and exciting. This book kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Can't wait for the next one!

As always well scripted with great cast of characters and a hunt to solve a mystery that nearly got an innocent man down to his last hours on death row killed. Melvin had been accused of a heinous act and served 20 years before he was saved and released

Book Description
In his #1 New York Times bestseller Memory Man, David Baldacci introduced the extraordinary detective Amos Decker-the man who can forget nothing. Now, Decker returns in a spectacular new thriller . . .
THE LAST MILE
Convicted murderer Melvin Mars is counting down the last hours before his execution--for the violent killing of his parents twenty years earlier--when he's granted an unexpected reprieve. Another man has confessed to the crime.
Amos Decker, newly hired on an FBI special task force, takes an interest in Mars's case after discovering the striking similarities to his own life: Both men were talented football players with promising careers cut short by tragedy. Both men's families were brutally murdered. And in both cases, another suspect came forward, years after the killing, to confess to the crime. A suspect who may or may not have been telling the truth.
The confession has the potential to make Melvin Mars--guilty or not--a free man. Who wants Mars out of prison? And why now?
But when a member of Decker's team disappears, it becomes clear that something much larger--and more sinister--than just one convicted criminal's life hangs in the balance. Decker will need all of his extraordinary brainpower to stop an innocent man from being executed.

My Review
Amos Decker is a very unique detective with his memory which cannot forget anything. Baldacci's writing is excellent and the plot does not disappoint. There are a lot of twists and turns which make for a page-turner that doesn't stop until the very last page. The novel is very entertaining and the characters are believable. I listened to the audio and never got bored as I found the story interesting. I look forward to the next installment in this series and recommend this book to those who like suspenseful mystery thrillers.

This is a well written book BUT it is overly long and shouldn't be, the story gets to the point that it is just drawn out too much, I did stick with it until about the last 100 pages and by that time I was getting tired of 'what is in the safety deposit box', it took a turn not expected (but then that is a good writing) but yet it falls in the category of being too long but it is worth reading

The book I got from the library was only 485 pages NOT 686

Baldacci has written about many different characters, but Amos Decker is unique. This book will wrap you in knots and keep you up all night.
