I didn't finish this book - Portia really annoyed me and I couldn't even warm to her in a love to hate her kind of way. I just wanted to smack her and tell her to get over herself.
However... that particular character aside - this is very typical Katie MacAlister and bound to be a hit with any fan!

The main character, Portia, was annoying. Yes, I get it. She's a scientist. She's a skeptic. So it takes her a while before she'll admit that anything paranormal is going on. But come on! In my opinion she waited WAY too long to believe, which cause me to not believe in her character. But once she does believe, she falls into it all the way, which seemed to contradictory to how hard she tried not to believe in the beginning. So that kinda spoiled the book for me and I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

Entertaining Katie McAllister fare. The main character, Portia, is not terribly believable though. She does a complete personality 180 as soon as she meets the yummy hero, Theo.

Okay, I have a confession to make. I'm a HUGE fan of this series. I am a huge fan of the author as well. She always writes with humor, but I believe that the opening to this book was by far my favorite. I loved the premise of the book. I enjoyed the friendship shared between two characters (Portia and her best friend she took the trip with) who have such vastly different worldviews. The only thing that irked me to know end, is that after having concluded the story (which involves a well written mystery), she throws another mystery at us. I have no idea if she is setting up another book or if she's just messing with our minds. My husband insists if I read it a couple or more times I could probably figure it out...but I don't reread books overly much. When I do, I have to wait some time in between. But who knows, maybe you can. And maybe you can post me back and help me to solve that last teaser she threw at us...And no, I can't tell you what it is either. =)

I love Katie MacAlister's writing... whether contemporary, historical or paranormal. Her characters are brave, clever, emotional and hilarious, as is true in this book. Not to mention Theo is a serious HOTTIE. And her storylines will keep you so engaged that although you want the hero and heroine to find a happy ending, you don't want to leave their wonderful world... this book was over too soon. But I loved every steamy, intriguing, brilliant and funny second of it!

Portia believes in nothing paranormal and debunks everything beyond the point of annoyance. Her and her friend visit one paranormal site after another - page after page - and Portia never lets up. I kept saying to myself, "get to the damn point already." And finally around page 100, it gets semi-interesting though I still had to force myself to continue reading.
All in all I found this book irritating and not worth the read. Portia is one of the most irritating heroines and Theo may be gorgeous but I would definitely have dropped him like a hot potato - arrogant jerk.
This is supposed to be a Dark Ones novel but vampires had a very minimal role in the story.

This was horrible. Out of all the books in this MacAlister series this has to be the worst! Aside from the extremely annoying heroine, the chemistry between Portia and Theo was pathetic. The sex scenes were lacking the intense love connection all the other books had! There were so many new terms created for this book it was so easy to get frustrated and lost. The writer should have made a vocabulary index. This had to have been rushed. Spoiler Alert: The ending was written to be intense but ended up feeling like a huge flub. She walks out of an abyss into Theos arms and they get it on? WTF? I couldn't figure out where the hell they were getting it on at! I can't believe I finished this mess. I was hoping it would get better. The most annoying was Theo's reference to Portia and his 'sweetling'. I couldn't help but be reminded of The L.J. Smith Vampire Diaries Bomb where Elena is refered to as 'my little lovey love'.

I like Katie MacAlister's work but this was definitely not one of her best.

This was the last of the Dark Ones series for now. I actually liked it better then the last few. The story was a little different. It seemed like there were all almost the same book with the ending being a big showdown with a demon. This one had all the same elements of the rest but with a different story and ending.

The only thing I can say for the book is that I eventually made it through it. It wasn't so bad that I quit in the middle. It certainly fell short of what I expect from a katie macalister though.

Katie MacAlister definitely can write hot, steamy sex scenes and combine them with laugh-out-loud characters for a fun, fast read.

I was really disappointed with this one. I found the three major characters very annoying. The book lacked the witty banter I find so much fun in her other books. I definitely recommend Katie MacAlister. Most of her books are great, just not this one.
