When Lindsay Fitch doesn't show up for her shift at the diner, her boss, Emily Mills, drives out to her home to check on her. Emily finds Lindsay dead...stabbed multiple times. Lindsay's husband Sean was also stabbed and hanged in the backyard. The local sheriff's office is in charge of the investigation. Emily worries that they have no experience in this kind of case, so she contacts the FBI. Agents Zander Wells and Ava McLane are sent to investigate. Zander learns that there was another hanging in this county twenty years ago. Emily's father, Lincoln Mills, was hanged in his backyard. Her mother committed suicide shortly after and her oldest sister disappeared, never to be seen again. Zander wonders if the current case may have something to do with the past.

The first book in the Columbia River series features several characters from Kendra Elliot's previous books. You don't have to read her older books before starting this one, but it will be a much richer experience if you do.

I enjoyed the mystery in this book. I was never sure what exactly happened twenty years ago and how it impacted these new murders. The romance portion of the book was weak. I really didn't see any chemistry between Zander and Emily. I'm hoping they will show up in this series again so we can see their relationship grow. My rating: 4 Stars.

Not a big fan of Elliot but I still keep trying her books maybe someday one will get a 5* review from me but I doubt it, I would consider her genre to be 'romance' and I'm not a fan of that genre

This one is just slow and draggy with too many descriptions of the landscape, houses, food, just not necessary to describe everything just get on with the story and make it better with more suspense

This is a common thing that I guess will never go away, it's about racism if you want to read that
