I missed reading The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave when it was released in 2021 so I was eager to read it this month for book club. I enjoyed the audiobook narrated by Rebecca Lowman. The novel asks the question, "How well do you know the people you love?"
I'd heard the basic premise: Hannah's husband Owen suddenly disappears, leaving a note that simply states "Protect her," meaning his 16-year-old daughter Bailey. I resonated with this as my relationship with my stepdaughter was very stormy in her teen years; I couldn't imagine finding myself in Hannah's position.
From the first chapter, the plot was propulsive and I was fully invested in learning what happens next. The story is primarily told through Hannah and Bailey with occasional flashbacks to share about Hannah and Owen's two-year marriage. My favorite part was Hannah and Bailey working together to understand why Owen left. Their investigation was practical and believable, and it was challenging to know who to trust.
This novel is a great combination of action and character development, and it generated interesting discussions at our book club meeting. The ending is controversial among readers; I enjoyed it.
Now I'm eager to watch Jennifer Garner star in a limited series based on the novel that will stream on Apple+ TV beginning April 14.
