Hack Holland is a product of the South, both old and new. Hard-drinking ex-POW and wealthy, progressive Democrat, he stands in the long shadow cast by his ancestors. When Holland's candidacy for a congressional seat brings him increasingly into conflict with those around him, his almost unwitting involvement with a violent civil rights conflict forces him to reassess his future - and his pastPublished throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s; represents Burke's early work before the creation of his now famous Cajun detective, Dave Robicheaux.

James Lee Burke has another winner in Hack Holland.
Having read all the Dave Robichaux novels, I turned to some of Burke's other characters. Hack Holland does not disappoint. Interesting story lines, well-drawn characters, and fast paced action make for a very interesting read.
I enjoyed this book very much.

another good one

This book is the story of the early life of Hack Holland during the time he was married to Verisa. Not James Lee Burke's best book but Burke is an excellent writer. I need to read his Dave Robicheaux series. Read for my Century of Mystery Novels. Published 1971
My copy is an ex-library book
