Although I've been reading about the Civil War for 63 years, I've read little about David Harvey Hill, who reached lieutenant general rank in the Confederate army. Perhaps due to the fact that few books were written about him, while he is mentioned in more general books about the War.

Gary Gallagher, a well respected Civil War historian, has filled that gap with this book. While the book is about Hill, it is also about the "War of the Confederate Generals" which destroyed the unity of the Confederate army's focus on the war. Many southern generals fought amongst each other---for promotion and credit for victories---as much as they fought the Union armies. Much has been written about how Confederate President Jefferson Davis favored his close friends who were generals and supported them when he should have replaced them. This book adds to that litany and also adds further fuel to the increasing criticism of Robert E. Lee.
