Ninth in the Jane Whitefield series. It's been several years since I read the last one and as usual I didn't remember many details, but I decided not to add them to my "re-reading series" project (so many books, so little time). That was fine, this one doesn't depend on knowing what happened before although there are references and plenty of explanation for new readers. It just isn't the best of the series. Perry has a rather "flat" style; I don't know if that's the right way to put it, it's all telling and no showing. Very little descriptive imagery, barely any emotional content, but lots of detail. Detail can be interesting, like when Jane's trying to survive in the wilderness, but tedious when she's cleaning out the refrigerator. A familiar plot with Jane helping out someone and then running from organized crime. You know they're going to catch up with her in the end, it's just a question of how she gets away. I'm not sure I believed in how Jane ran her way through the wilderness - so few obstacles off trail? - and there were too many bits of lucky timing. I liked being with Jane again and I am guessing this might be her last appearance, but Perry's books have been uneven for me the last few years. Too bad, because his early stuff is so, so good.
