For lovers of Brit mystery-this is one in a series about Detective Rutledge set in the World War I era-each one is "intelligent and affecting" and this one was a NY Times notable book of the year

I LOVE Charles Todd. True character building, you can read from one book to the next and never get that sinking feeling of losing a good friend at the end of a book.

Absolutely great!!!!

A sensitive approach, literate prose, and provocative situations mark Todd's latest addition to his Ian Rutledge series. Although recovered enough from World War I shell shock to function ably in his job with Scotland Yard, Ian still carries with him an internal voice of guilt named Hamish, a soldier he ordered shot for cowardice. When Ian investigates a possible murder in Scotland, the main suspect turns out to be the dead Hamish's intended, who seems destined for the gallows but will not betray a confidence. Very forceful emotional scenes ensue as Ian ferrets out the truth. A special treat for series and historical fans.

Very good psychological suspense/crime set in post WWI England.

4 stars - interesting entry in this excellent, unusual, series. Inspector Ian Rutledge travels to Scotland where he must investigate a socially delicate murder while fighting his PTSD deamons.

Why has the village turned against this lone woman and her child to accuse her of murder? Rutledge finds he owes her a special debt and must keep her from being hanged. This tale starts with several mysteries to unravel. A lot of interesting characters figure in the unwinding of the cloth and you get to know them well. The plot concludes with bodies all over the stage and you must decide if justice has been done. Really engaging: this will keep you turning pages to the end. Don't try reading the last page first; it doesn't help! Great story!

I'm lucky to read these in order and this one was the best yet. I do agree with the reviewer who said he ends things too soon. A little more tying up of loose-ends would be good, though it makes one rush on to the next title with some urgency.

** spoiler alert ** I really liked it in spite of: the first 50 pages were devoted to bringing a new reader up to date; the last 50 pages were devoted to describing in detail the landscape of the Scottish country side-several times; and Mr. Todd has chosen to leave us hanging. I will not say more...no spoiler really. I think maybe he thinks we won't buy the next book if he keeps us in suspense. It reminds of the serials at the movies when I was a kid 'Come back next week' or when you watch a TV show only for it to end with 'to be continued'. Otherwise, the mystery kept me reading. It is one of those books that you don't want to put down until you have it solved!
