Classic Elizabeth Peters early mystery.
The amusing part is who the love interest is supposed to resemble. You will never guess.

I highly recommend this book to lovers of mysteries and history. Elizabeth Peters delivers a fast-paced murder mystery set in the highlands of Scotland. When I finished I felt I had just taken a European vacation. Much fun!

"Scotland is Susan's passion and obsession - and the opportunity to join a Highland dig is a dream come true for the young archaeology student. But then a sinister stranger slips Susan a cryptic message in ancient verse - and is later found viciously slain. A mysterious peril has unexpectedly emerged from the mists to haunt Susan, sending her running for her life in the company of handsome, unconventional laird Jamie Erskine. For she has an unseen ememy hiding tn the shadows - someone who is going to great lengths to frame her for murder.....and to bury Susan, if necessary, in this land she loves."

"Intelligent plotting, engaging characters and stylish writing....we can hardly ask for anything more." ~ Cincinnati Enquirer

It was a cute story - not what I had expected. I wish there was a little more of a 'finish' to it, though!

It's very dated and very twee. Plotwise it's The 39 Steps meets Macbeth.

There can't be a better recommendation that saying it's written by Elizabeth Peters.

The back of the book says: It was a dream come true, Susan loved all things Scottish, so when the opportunity came there was no question in her mind that she would go on the archaeological dig in the Highlands. However, it was a living nightmare as a cryptic message is slipped to Susan by a sinister shadow and the police who want to talk about murder.
