LEMONS NEVER LIE by Richard Stark: When asked why he robbed banks, Willie Sutton is alleged to have replied, because they have the money. Part-time theatre operator Alan Grofield must have been thirsty, because he joins a plot to knock over a Las Vegas brewery in number 22 of the Hard Case Crime series. When Grofield flies in to Vegas he drops a coin in one of the arrival gate slot machines. When it turns up three lemons, he knows he has used up all his Vegas luck. Unfortunately when he and friend Dan decide to walk away, the instigator of the plot, a man named Myer, is not thrilled and plans a payback. This results in Dan tracking down Myer for his own vengeance, which results in a vicious revenge circle that pulls Grofield away from his theatre with only one purpose. - To find and kill Myer!
Alan Grofield is the owner of a local theater, and part time criminal. When he and his wife Mary need money for a vacation or to finance the theater's next season he pulls a caper with a loose team of associates. Grofield and his friend Dan Leach are double-crossed and robbed by the psychopathic Andrew Myers. When Leach tries to take revenge on Myers, he inadvertently draws Myers' attention to Grofield and his wife.
Lemons Never Lie starts slowly, but really picks up during the last half. Stark has written an engaging story about honor (and the lack of) among thieves, with plenty of violence and plot twists.

When he's not pulling heists with his friend Parker, Alan Grofield runs a small theater in Indiana. But putting on shows costs money and jobs have been thin, which is why Grofield agrees to listen to Andrew Myers' plan to knock over a brewery. Unfortunately, Myers' plan is insane, so Grofield walks out on him. And you don't walk out on Myers.
