I am a HUGE fan of Sandra Brown......but was rather disappointed in this book! Not up to what I have come to expect from her. Really had to force my way thru it.

I've always enjoyed Sandra Brown's books, even after she switched from writing romance to writing romantic suspense.
This book had me pulled in from the beginning and kept my attention. I'm not good at writing reviews and don't want to risk any spoilers, so I'll keep this review generic. If you are like me and skim ahead in a book to see what's going to happen, I strongly recommend that you don't do that for this book. The Bookkeeper, the villain in this story, has law enforcement officials in their pocket. I actually figured out who the Bookkeeper was without reading ahead and the suspense made the book that much more enjoyable.
If you're looking for a romance, this book is not for you. This book is a gritty, suspense filled mystery that I highly recommend. I hope to see the hero and heroine as secondary characters in a sequel sometime.

So, so. Typical NYT best seller. Marginal story about corrupt police and FBI in Louisiana, ok ending.

Honor Gillette and her four-year-old daughter, Emily, are taken hostage by Lee Coburn, a man accused of murdering seven men the previous night. Coburn promises Honor that he won't hurt her or her daughter if she helps him find the information her late husband possessed. Honor knows nothing about any information or evidence, but will do anything to keep her daughter safe.

This book drew me in from the first chapter. I love "hostage" and "on the run" themes. There are a lot of twists and turns in the plot, and I was certainly surprised by the identity of the villain. My only drawback and the reason I couldn't give this book 5 Stars was the ending. Why couldn't we have just another page or two to complete the romance? My rating: 4.5 Stars.

I was disappointed in this Sandra Brown novel. The storyline was interesting but seemed to drag on forever. The 'bookkeeper' turned out to be a person so out of character and made the ending lame and anti-climatic. The main male in the tale would do better in a spy espionage setting rather than a small town domestic situation. Not the best Sandra Brown compared to previous novels.

Not up to Sandra Brown's usual standards. I was disappointed and almost gave up on it a couple of times.

Enjoyed the story, good page-turner. The twists start happening within the first few chapters and then don't let up. You never know which way this is going to go.

::::::Small spoilers::::::: Extreme sarcasm used::::::::
Four year old Emily Gillette sees a sick man laying in the front yard and tells her Mother, Honor. What would a widowed woman do with a four year old out in the middle of nowhere, well it is not call 911 or anyone for help, just rush out to render aid with the four old in tow. Man has gun and is wanted for murdering seven men in cold blood the night before. Oh yes, the man tells the helpful woman that if she does what he tells her to do they would not be hurt. Yep so far a yawnnnn story that has been done to death. The man turns out to be Lee Coburn, a man who claims to be innocent. Honor's late husband has hidden something and Coburn must find it and tears apart the house. Someone is shot and killed and that sends the three on the run. Man and woman start to like each other. WOW, did not see that coming. Oh yes and there is someone who is called the Bookkeeper who is running things. Oh I am not going on with this. I really hated this predictable over done love story. I felt sorry for the four year old, the rest I could care less about.
