Time is running out for Jimmy Tock, the reluctant and adorable hero of this book. I fell in love with Jimmy and his unconventional family, who look at life with insight, humor, and a great deal of trepidation as five darkly predicted dates loom closer and closer. And just when you think you have everything figured out, Koontz pulls the rug out from under his readers yet again, leaving us gasping in shock, horror, and laughter - but not necessarily at the same time. There is no other writer that can make me shiver and sputter at the same time.

Rudy Tock paces between the ICU where his father lies dying and the maternity ward where is son is about to be born. At the very moment of his fathers death, his son is born. In the short minutes before his last breath Josef Tock predicts the very birth, weight and five days of in the future of his grandson.
The Tocks proceed for the next 20 years as a normal American family, then in his 20th year the first of the five predictions comes true and the Tock family is changed forever.
This is a page turner, and edge of the seat, mindlessly eat your popcorn, I wish this was a movie, kind of book. A must read for everyone. The suspence and twist and turns and the huge suprise toward the end is simply spine tingling.
Don't let this book go unread.

I abolsoutely LOVED this book. My boyfriend and all his friends love Dean Koontz books, and they got me hooked! Jimmy, the main character, is so likable and relateable, I was rooting for him the entire time; all the while being in the grips suspense. Dean Koontz is a genius!

This is my absolute favorite book of Dean Koontz's. The humor intertwined with the tension is fantastic!
I was pleasantly suprised by this book. I went into it thinking that Dean Koontz is darker than what I normally like, but I found myself laughing out loud in a lot of places in this book. I loved it and can't wait to read more by this author.

This was insane. I mean a psycho clown-well you people should just read this. There are many twists and turns. Just when you think you figured it out Dean Koontz does the bizzare even for him.

This novel is an excellent work of fiction writing. Not only has Koontz created extremely believable characters out of characters that otherwise should be ridiculous, but he puts the reader into the world through vivid description without sacrificing the exciting thrill of the plot that unfolds throughout the story.
I was endlessly impressed by the quality of the writing in addition to the quality of the story.
An excellent read for anyone looking for an intense, action filled thriller with just the right amount of comic relief.
I highly recommend this novel.

Wow! This book totally blew me away. Best Koontz book I've read yet, and I thought Odd Thomas would be a tough act to follow. I may have to pick up a copy of this book for own PC bookshelf so I can let hubby and all my other non-BC friends read it too. :)
Great character development, suspense, the kind of book I didn't want to put down. At times, I was so anxious to know how a particular situation would turn out that I'd find myself skipping ahead a couple of chapters, and then immediately scolding myself for doing so. Screw going to bed! I must read a few more chapters so I can see how this part turns out! LOL
Though it contained plenty of suspense, it was also a love story in a sense, not a romance, but so many parts of the book, and particularly the end, gave me the warm fuzzies--the kind that bring tears to your eyes. I guess touching is the right word, as the story touched me on so many levels. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it held me in thrall. An excellent read indeed!

Dean Koontz is the master of creating characters that people fall in love with. And then making their lives a living hell.
Jimmy Tock has to live his life knowing the exact dates when he will suffer greatly. Preparing for those days is impossible. All he can do is fight.

A roller coaster of a novel filled with enough twists, turns, shocks, and surprises for ten novels. A story of five days in a young man life and how he discovers life.

This was such a fun read - even though I figured out the major twist by the end, I still loved it. Not typical Koontz - very lighthearted and absurd. Don't read if you are afraid of clowns, though.

This is the first Dean Koontz book that I read and after reading this book, I will try and read more! The author cleverly weaves a story of Jimmy who is giving a glimpse into the future. His uncle, at Jimmy's birth, predicts five horrible days that will happen to him. How Jimmy makes lemonade out of lemons is the true story of the book. I could not put this book down!

This is so good, that I've ordered more of his books! I love the way the characters in this book face the bad things in their lives with humor - something I can relate to. Humor in a terrible situation keeps one grounded.
I LOVE this book! It was one of the first books I read by Koontz and it is one of the most unique stories I've ever read. I've always hated clowns, so it really added and extra creepy factor for me.
Excellent Dean Koontz book. My personal favorite (I've read pretty much every book he's written), have re-read many times. Highly recommend!!!!!!
Great book--humor, suspense, action.
Koontz created a great story--a must read.

My favorite Koontz book so far. Tons of twists and turns.
I enjoyed the book, but not as much as some of the other Dean Koontz books that I've read.
This is the 2nd book I've read by Koontz after The Husband - what a ride! He is one of the best storytellers I've ever read. Get ready for a treat!!
I loved this book! If you enjoy Dean Koontz you will too!
Koontz is at is again. Jimmy Tock was warned at his birth that he will have to face 5 terrible days in his life, the last during his thirtieth year. This is the story of his life and those 5 days. Not the best Koontz story but an easy and enjoyable read.
Life of Jimmy whose grandfather had a vision of 5 dark days in his grandson's life. Excellent plot.
A book of love and hope amongst evil.
A great story with many twists and turns
It's CLOWNS vs PASTRY CHEFS in this page turning thriller. I had a hard time putting this one down.
Usual Koontz formula, pluses include the macabre relationship between the different circus workers and the entire clown family affair. This win, like most of Koontz's ends well...sort of...
Awsome book. If you love Dean Koontz as much as I do you will love this book!!
Koontz at his usual craft. I prefer Stephen King, because there's always a monster lurking nearby, whereas Koontz' books are more psychological.
I was up all night reading this! The protagonist is only slightly befuddled up until the end. There is quite a surprise at the end!
This is a wonderful book. The story is gripping, suspenseful, frightening and laugh out loud funny. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Every book is full of surprises
The story was so fascinating, as are all of Koontz's works! I couldn't put it down!
It is a thriller!
Comedic-Horror or Horrific-Comedy...your call; but with four dimensional characters, and clever wordplay this is not your typical Koontz.
Good read. Kept me going and interesting until the end.
This book was great! My favorite Dean Koontz book yet.
Scarey.....and exciting.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Right before a child is born, his grandfather predicts 5 fateful days on his deathbed. Along with those 5 days he gives uncanny details about his grandson's birth to the child's father. After that the story takes off. It is somewhat predictable but that does not take away from the story. There is suspense, wit and madness all balled into one. I totally recommend this book.
Loved it
Good book. It gets you in and keeps you going pretty well. It's not a book that you can't put down but it is a good read.
One of my favorite Dean Koontz
I stopped reading this guys a few years back. His endings, to me, were terrible. Thought Id try him again and found this book very very good. It turned out to be a real page turner. Kept me always wanting more. Very well thought out story.
It's been several years since I've read Dean Koontz. I was pleasantly surprised by the humor that mirrored the gloom and doom in the story line. Great plot twists, great story.
I read this book in two days, not unusual for me and any Koontz' book. I enjoyed it, but I did find it different. I found the family witty and charming, however I knew from the beginning who the bad guys were.
This is a great one.....very humorous dialogue between the two main characters and a great plot (one that hasn't been done before!) One of my favorite Koontz books!
Koontz is working at his pinnacle, providing terrific entertainment that deals seriously with some of the deepest themes of human existence: the nature of evil, the grip of fate and the power of love.
Very captivating book; hard to put down. A "must read" for Dean Koontz fans!
This is a quick read that kept me entertained throughout. I thought it was a great book.
Much better than many of his others. Any book where clowns are the villains just seems to make an intuitive sense. Warped kind of world where this bizarre story has a certain verisimilitude. One caveat, however, is the main character and his perfect family. One thumb up, one stuck down throat, I guess.
I *loved* this book. Best Koontz ever. Full of humor, suspense, and all kinds of twists and turns.
I just couldn't put the book down! From morning until I turned off my bedside lamp and got shut eye, I was reading this book. Lots of twists and turns to keep you in suspense and get excited for more!
A grandfather's prophecy of five dark days in a boy's life comes true, but how?
Good Koontz, interesting.
Great read, great tempo. Hard to put down. Koontz never disappoints!
Good, entertaining read. Koontz's writing style has improved dramatically over the years.
Excellent. The best Koontz I've read in awhile.
My opinion: One of Koontz' more involved and detailed books -- really goes into the characters. A great read for Koontz fans.
From Publisher Weekly: His narrator is Jimmy Tock, a pastry chef in a Colorado resort town. On the day he was born, Jimmy's dying grandfather predicted five future dates that would be terrible for Jimmy; he might have mentioned, but didn't, the birth day itself, which sees a mass slaying by a bitter, deranged circus clown in the hospital where Jimmy is born. The bulk of the narrative concerns the first terrible day, about 20 years later, when the vengeful son of that clown takes Jimmy and a lovely young woman, Lorrie Hicks, hostage in the local library, with an eye toward destroying the town; Jimmy and the woman live to marry, but will they and their family survive the four subsequent terrible days? Like most of Koontz's novels, this one pits good versus evil and carries a persuasive spiritual message, about the power of love and family and the miracle of existence. As such it deals with serious, perennial themes, yet with its steady drizzle of jokes and witty repartee, it does so with a lightness of touch that few other authors can match. Koontz is a true original and this novel, one of his most unusual yet, will leave readers aglow and be a major bestseller.

This is vintage Koontz. A suprise at every turn. If your not s Koontz fan you must try this for a sample. If you are a follower of Koontz you will enjoy his truly exceptional writing skills and his limitless imagination.
This is one of my favorites by Dean Koontz! There is some humor thrown in besides the regular dose of thriller.
I believe that this is his best to date.it made me laugh it made me gasp. something new at each turn.
If you are a Stephen King fan, and haven't read Dean Koontz, you owe it to yourself to discover his writing!
Interesting story, could be better written. Not deep enough, needs more character developement
One of my favorite Koontz books. Very fast paced with lots of twists.
As usual, Koontz keeps you on the edge of your seat through the whole book. Be prepared to stay up late with this one, you can't put it down!
I don't like all of Koontz's stuff but this is one that I like a lot. Koontz sets up the book to the degree it is hard to put down and there is lots of surprises.
Even with 5 kids, I finished this book within just a few hours! Grabs you from the beginning, and won't let go!
On the NYTimes Bestseller list.
I loved this book! Had a hard time putting it down!
....So bizarre. Keeps you laughing, too. :-)

I really liked this book. Dean Koontz seems to get even more positive as time goes on, which I like.

Very interesting premise- well written- definately my favorite Dean Koontz book.
Didn't read. Sounds good, but I let the author's politics color my opinion of him and that put me off this time. Got good review in Chicago Sun-Times.
Experience five critical days in the life of Jimmy Tock, as foretold by his Grandfather on his death bed.
A departure from the normal Koontz, more in line with the Odd Thomas series.
A fast read that has enough twists to hold your attention.

great !!!!!!!!!!!!
Entertaining A good light read
Couldn't put it down! What a good book!
Intriguing!!!!
A great combination of wit and suspense. If you've ever been put off by any of Koontz's more frightening works, give this one a try. There is some murder and mayhem, to be sure, but you'll also get a good look at Koontz's sentimentality and sense of humor.
Great read! I really enjoyed this book - especially the main characters and their relationship. Fun!
I'm a big Dean Koontz fan, and have to say this book didn't do it for me. The characters were likable, the story was sweet, but it seemed too formulaic. I kept waiting to be surprised, but it never happened. There are many other Koontz books I would recommend over this one.
THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT.. YOU WILL NEVER BELIEVE THE TWISTS THAT THIS BOOK HAS
a fast read. I found myself turning the pages faster then I normally would, because it was indeed a thriller.
it had been a long time since i have read anything by this author, and i am left wonderingy why? this book was wonderful.Jimmy Toc's life lives under a cloud of 5 days that terrible things that will happen to him,as told by his grandfather at the time of his death and the exact same time of Jimmy's birth.

I enjoyed this book so much. I absolutely loved the main character's wife Lorrie Lynn, so had a great spirit.
I really enjoyed this book! I did not see the surprise near the end coming! Suspenseful, yet humorous too.
Great book! I didn't enjoy as much as The Taking.... but very good indeed.
On the night that Jimmy Tock is born, his paternal grandfather, Josef, is in the same hospital, dying of a stroke. A storm rages outside as Jimmy's father, Rudy, moves between the expectant father's waiting room and his dying father's bedside. At the peak of the storm, Josef suddenly sits up in bed and, though aphasic since his stroke, regains his ability to speak. He describes in very particular detail his baby grandson — Jimmy — who is at that moment being born in another ward. Then, with great urgency, he imparts five dates to Rudy, five dates in the life of Jimmy. Although Josef is not entirely coherent, he makes it clear as he dies that each of these dates will be a dark one in the life of his grandson, a day of terrible events for which Jimmy must prepare himself.
All the particulars Josef has provided about his infant grandson prove to be precisely accurate, solidly establishing Josef's bona fides as a deathbed clairvoyant. What terrifying events await Jimmy Tock on those five days in his life? The first is to occur in his 20th year; the second in his 23rd year; the third in his 28th; the fourth in his 29th; the fifth in his 30th. LIFE EXPECTANCY unfolds over the course of these five shattering days, as the breathtaking narrative picks up Jimmy at each of these crisis points in his life and carries the reader along on a thrilling journey that defies all expectation, along a twisting, terrifying, and ultimately triumphant course that only Dean Koontz could devise

This is a hilarious page-turner in the style of John Irving's The World According to Garp. Full of life's little ironies...to the extreme!!!
I have read every book written by Dean Koontz, and I must say that, in my opinion, this is by far his best work. This book literally kept me on the edge of my seat! It was fun, scary, entertaining, beyond belief at times, and a completely memorable and satisfying read. I can't recommend this book highly enough!
My husband read this book.. said it was really good.
Great book. A little different from the normal Koontz but it keeps you drawn in to the very end.
I like Koontz - but this is one of his best because it's funny! A little unrealistic at times but a good moral story.
I thought it was one of his best. If you like Koontz, you won't be disappointed
Enjoyable from beginning to end (according to my husband).
This was a great book. Even though it is called Life Expectancy. Nothing that happened in it was expected. It always kept me on edge wondering what was going to happen. I just couldn't put it down.
Jimmy's grandfather told him about 5 dates that would be critical, dark days.
A great read..loved the charactors and the plot.

Excellent Book. The story of Jimmy Tock and the five most important dates of his life. LOVED IT!
This is kind of a different style of book for Dean Koontz. I LOVE it though!! It's really funny and it's impossible to put down. I've read it more than once.
Not Koontz's usual style, but interesting
Koontz writes of hope and love in the midst of evil in inspiring and moving ways. Unusual and uplifting.
Loved it. Jimmy's grandfather gives dates of five days that will be hell on earth. It keeps you on the edge of your seat as each day approaches and you find out grandfather was right.
Another great book! I am never disappointed.

Rare to find a book that the whole family enjoys so much! Light balances dark, humor balances horror. Story has 'gotchas' for the reader. Fun!
I am a Koontz FAN and this is defnitely one of my favorites!
Very strange book about a prediction by a grandfather to a grandson and how they come true throughout his life. very unexpected twists and humore too.
I really liked this one. It kinda of reminded me of Fun House, but written for the adult reader, with a better over-all readablity!

My husband rates it between 3-4 *s b/c of it's variation of plot from Koontz's familiar Man, Single-Mom, Kid, Dog plots. Although Koontz is not my husband's favorite author, he does like the genre and has read most of his titles, and thinks this is one of the better.

Killer Clowns vs Pastry Chefs! Koontz at his tongue in cheek best.
Another greatr Koontz book
Dean Koontz never fails to intrigue and captivate a reader with his sense of urgency and intricate twists and mystery in story telling. Another masterful script that does not disappoint those fans of his works.
Jimmy Tock comes into the world on the very night his grandfather leaves it. As a violent storm rages outside the hospital, Rudy Tock spends long hours walking the corridors between the expectant fathers' waiting room and his dying father's bedside. It's a strange vigil made all the stranger when, at the very height of the storms fury, Josef Tock suddenly sits up in bed and speaks coherently for the first and last time since his stroke. What he says befor he dies is that there will be five dark days in life of his grandson-five dates whose terrible events Jimmy will have to prepare himself to face. The first is to occur in his twentieth year; the second in his twenty-third year; the third in his twenty-eighth; the fourth in his twenty-ninth; the fifth in his thirtieth. Rudy is all too ready to discount his father's last words as a dying man's delusional rambling. But then he discovers that Josef also predicted the time of his grandson's birth to the minute, as well as his exact height and weight, and the fact Jimmy would be born with syndactyly-the unexplained anomaly of fused digits-on his left foot. Suddenly the old man's predictions take on a chilling significance. What terrifying events events await Jimmt on these five dark days? what nightmares will he face? What challenges must he survive? As the novel unfolds, picking up Jimmy's story at each of these crises points, the path he must follow will defy every expectation. And with each crises he faces, he will move closer to a fate he never cuold have imagined. For who Jimmy Tock is and what he must acomplish on the five days when his world turns is a mystery as dangerous as it is wonderous-a struggle against an evil so dark and pervasive, only the most extraordinary of human spirits can shine through.
Very enjoyable. Some unusual twists.
an on the edge of your seat read
I liked this book, it made me laugh some, and had some surprises. Maybe just not enough for me. Just wasn't quite as scary as I thought it would be.
Classic Koontz. Great story, a fun read.
Book in great condition, never read so i can't tell you too much about it. Hardcover, with papersleeve, does have a bit of wear on the papersleeve but not much. By Dean Koontz
Great story!
Usual Koontz, interesting characters.
