Loved this book! Instead of getting tons of money and the presidency of the company when her mother dies, Brett gets a list of goals that she wrote when she was 14. In order to receive her inheritance, she must complete the list within 1 year.
Read this book in one sitting. The characters are funny and the plot is happy, sad, touching, inspirational - ends on a very happy note. Perfect chick lit.

I am going to surprise even myself here, but I really liked this book. Chick Lit is not my usual thing, but when some of my fellow PBSers recommended this book, I felt I should check it out. It was much better than I expected. The plot did not start with the annoying and trite 'So-and-so has it all, a great job, a loving husband, the perfect career with a six-figure salary, a vacation home, a ...you get the idea' as so many nonsense chick lit books do.
Well she does start with the surface-level great life, but then she goes on to find an actual great life. There were many moments in this book when I rolled my eyes thinking the main character was about to do some cliche chick lit thing...but then, SHE DOESN'T, making the book eventful and one I could relate to.

I really loved this book; it's one of my favorites. It's a smart, upper crust version of Bridget Jones or even the Shopaholic. The main character Brett mourns her mother's death while anticipating a major promotion at the family business. When things don't turn out as she planned, she thinks it's going to be the end of her world. While that isn't too far from the truth, the reader soon finds out that Brett definitely needed a gentle kick in the pants, and her mama was going to take care of it even in death.
One aspect that made The Life List so unusual was the way Elizabeth, Brett's deceased mother, was such a strong presence throughout the book. I thought it would be difficult to relate to Brett because of her family's wealth; however, she was pretty down to earth. Her endearing mannerisms made me root for her every step of the way. Though I figured out the ending pretty early on, there were enough surprises to keep me hooked.
This book quickly earned my-favorites-ever status. It was the type of story that made me appreciate my blessingsâ¦.even from the stiff chair in a hospital room. When the book's scenes started to play out in my mind, I started hoping that this might be a movie someday.

When Brett's Mother dies from cancer she leaves behind a 'to-do' list that Brett must accomplish in order to get her inheritance. Brett's Mom has decided that Brett's life isn't turning out the way that Brett had once hoped and with the list, she hopes to steer Brett in a different direction. The tasks on the list include everything from: fall in love to have a baby to buy a horse. Huge tasks that overwhelm and scare Brett, who thinks her life is just fine thank you. With the help of family and new friends Brett struggles to accomplish the list during the allotted time frame. A very predictable, but yet emotional story. A bit silly at times. A bit stereotypical at times. But, still a worthy read. It will give my book club something to chat about this month.
